Viewing window: You can watch the movie that is emerging by using the controls underneath. These work like a standard video player. Timeline: When you insert video this is where it will appear. You edit the film within the timeline. Toolbars: Everything you would want to do with the clips is one click away on these tabs. The name is often self explanatory. Tip: Often the best way forward is to click and see what happens. As long as you do not save the original clips stay intact.

As easy as... click Tip: This assumes you have video stored on your computer. You need to transfer the video files from your camera to your hard drive. You can also browse from your camera but you will always then need your camera attached. You can use downloaded video from the internet too. Remember copyright. If students are going to use pre-existing footage encourage them to Google “open source video” or “copyright free video clips.”

Click on title and then a black screen will appear at the start of your video. These are the video options. You can change the colour and duration of the titles. The text editing toolbar works very much like Word and PowerPoint. You can change the font, size and colour of the text. You can also edit the animation of the text. These screens show the adaptations that can be made to the title screen. Notice how a bar moves through the timeline to indicate where the video is in its progress.

You can trim a clip by setting a start point and end point and then clicking trim tool. Alternatively if you want the beginning and end of the clip you can split the clip and then trim each clip. You can find the split or trim point by clicking on play and pause to reach the point in the clip you are looking for. Alternatively you can drag the marker through the timeline to the moment you want before clicking trim or split.

To delete highlight the clip by clicking on it then press delete. To move highlight the clip, click and hold the left hand button on the mouse and drag to where you want it.

Adding a photograph or picture is the same as adding video clips. Click on add videos and photographs, browse your files, select and click ok. You can then click and drag it to the place you would like it to be and rotate it, if necessary. Adding visual effects is very easy. Click on the clip you are interested in changing, click the visual effects tab and then select the effect that you would like to use. If you would like to add an effect to a small part of the clip you should split the clip and then add the effect to the part of the clip you would like.

Click on caption in the toolbar. Use the text toolbar to edit the text. Click, hold and drag the text box to reposition the text. Click on credits and a screen will appear at the end of the video. The same options for text editing and animation are available here as are available with titles screens.

Adding a transition is easy. You click on the clip that you want the transition for which you want it to feature at the start. You then click on animation and the transition that you would like. You can change the duration of the transition by using the drop down menu. With photographs you can add pan and zoom. Click on the photograph and then click of the pan/ zoom option.

click Browse your music collection. Remember copyright – it is probably best to source free music. The music will automatically edit itself to the length of the video. To lengthen the music you need to change the duration of clips, titles and credits. You can fade the music in and out and change when the music begins and ends within the video clips you have created. When adding music you might want to take the volume off the video. Click here and change the volume settings.

Click on youtube. (You can also publish to a DVD and save to the computer. If you click on the down arrow you will have options to save the file in different forms, including small enough to or view on a phone. Enter your password and then complete the form with the details of the video. The program will then do all the work. You will need to wait until youtube process the video before you can view it online.
