Social Security Benefits

Supplemental Security Income $721 Medicaid

Social Security Disability Insurance $Amount$ Medicare

When you start work SSI Check

EXAMPLE If you work, earn $1,000 gross monthly $1,000 work earnings $ SSI

Work Incentives Work Earnings $ + SSI SSI = BONUS!!!

$1527+ work earnings SSI= $0 IF

NOW … Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SSDI check will either CONTINUE OR STOP

If you start working… 9 Trial Work Period Months (TWP) “TRY & WORK” TWP = $770+/month 9 TWP months over 5 years

1 st EXAMPLE….. if you worked 2010 $ $ $ $ $720 Feb $300 Dec $375 July $350 Nov $515 Jan $800 March $220 April $80 August $375 Sept $425 FIRED! QUIT!

2 nd EXAMPLE….. if you worked 2010 $ $ $ $ $720 Feb $800 Dec $810 July $870 Nov $795 Jan $800 March $820 April $810 August $850 Sept $875 FIRED! QUIT!

AFTER 9 TRIAL WORK PERIOD MONTHS USED….

Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) EPE = 3 years If you earn OVER (+) $1070 Check STOPS If you earn BELOW (-) $1070 Check continues Work $ + SSDI $

SO DURING EXTENDED PERIOD OF ELIGIBILITY (EPE) -3 YEARS- AND YOU CONTINUE EARNING OVER $1070 COMES GRACE PERIOD….

Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) EPE = 3 years If you earn OVER (+) $1070 Check STOPS GRACE PERIOD

Grace Period Consecutive 3 months 3 MORE CHECKS Earn OVER (+) $1070

AFTER GRACE PERIOD, CHECK STOPS COMPLETELY Expedited Reinstatement (EXR)- 5 YEARS Begins

IF YOU WORK AND EARN BELOW $1070 THEN YOU MAY NEVER HAVE A GRACE PERIOD EXTENDED PERIOD OF ELIGIBILITY (EPE)- 3 YEARS CONTINUES… YOUR CHECK KEEPS COMING!

IF YOU WORK AND EARN OVER $1070 THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GRACE PERIOD SUPPOSE YOU GET FIRED/QUIT IF YOU ARE IN STILL IN EXTENDED PERIOD OF ELIGIBILITY (EPE) YOUR CHECK BEGINS AGAIN!

Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) EXR = 5 years IF QUIT OR FIRED Check starts AGAIN quickly

9 TWP months Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) 3 YEARS WORK CHECK Maybe CHECK or NO CHECK Expedited Reinstatement 5 YEARS

THAT’S THE BASICS OF SSI AND SSDI

SSI & SSDI Work Incentives Impairment Related Work Expenses – Consumer pays out of pocket NOT DARS – MUST be related to disability – IRWE is approved by SSA and must show receipts EXAMPLES – Cell phone IF you use texting at work – Batteries for hearing aids – Hearing aid accessories – Internet on Ipad for VP

SSI Work Incentives Student Earned Income Exclusion – Under the age of 22 “student” HS OR College – Can work without SSI deductions – Work and earn $1750 month OR $7,060 year – SSI check should stay the SAME – NO Deductions to check!

THERE ARE MORE WORK INCENTIVES BUT THESE APPLY THE MOST TO DEAF/HH CONSUMERS

NOW LETS DISCUSS HEALTH BENEFITS…

MEDICAID If NO SSI, you may qualify for Medicaid 1619(b)- FREE! Work earnings$1 SSIMedicaid

Medicaid 1619(b)- FREE! State of Texas 2014 – Work earnings limit is $33,407 annually – Report income to SSA monthly – Keep resources $2000/$3000 for couple ***Spouse’s income CAN affect eligibility If you don’t qualify for Medicaid 1619 (b), Then try Medicaid Buy In (LOW COST!)

Healthcare continues… SSI & Medicaid $1 of SSI = Medicaid Work earnings $ increase (b) If you lose 1619 (b) -Medicaid Buy In (MBI) SSDI & Medicare SSDI = Medicare Work earnings $ increase + -NO SSDI- Extended Medicare - Medicaid Buy In SSDI, SSI, Medicare AND Medicaid SSDI = Medicare $1 SSI= Medicaid Work earnings $ increase + NO SSDI- Extended Medicare 1619 (b) OR Medicaid Buy In (MBI)
