Warm-Up #4 1) Suzanne drives 165 miles in 3 hours. What is her average speed in miles per hour? 2) Find the unit price per doughnut if it costs $2.80 for eight doughnuts. 3) A 3-pack of paper towels costs $2.79. A 6-pack costs $5.46. Which is the better deal? 55 miles per hour The unit price is $0.35 per doughnut. The 6-pack is the better deal with a unit rate of $0.91 per roll.

Percent Proportion

Proportion What am I Learning Today? How will I show that I learned it? Use percent, decimal, and fraction interchangeably Use proportional reasoning to solve percent problems. Apply percent proportion to real-world applications

Vocabulary Percent: A ratio comparing a number to 100 Percent Proportion: part=percent total 100

Questions Notes EXAMPLE: TV City is advertising 10% off all TVs at their store. The original price of a Sony 50” projection TV is $1800. What is the savings? Questions Answers How are percent problems expressed? How do I use proportion to solve percent problems? 3 Types: _______ is ________% of _______ is % of 100 X ) Set it up in statement form: X is 10% of $1800 2) Create a proportion: ? ? ? given = 1) Substitute what you know. Put a variable for what you do not. 2) Use cross products to form an equation. 3) Solve the equation for the variable. = 100 x = x = 180,000 x = $180 savings What is 5% of 19? 3.5 is what % of 40? 342 is 90% of what?

Try This! Rewrite the sentence, then solve using proportion. Show your work. What is 45% of 150? 12 is what percent of 240? 14 is 35% of what number? 60% of what number is 27? X = 67.5 X = 5 X = 40 X = 45

Independent Practice 1) Three basketball players have the flu and are barfing all over the place. If this is 20% of the team, how many players are on the whole team? 2) TRUE FACT: In making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, 96% of the people put on the peanut butter first. Out of 12,000 people making sandwiches, how many people would spread the peanut butter on first? 3) In a bizarre turn of events, 2 people in a certain family stubbed their toe, developed gangrene, and died. If there were 16 people in the whole family (including aunts and uncles), what percent stubbed their toe? 4) “Arachibutyrophobia” (I-RA-KID-BU-TI-RO-PHO-BI-A) is the fear of peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of your mouth. What percent of the letters in that word is an ‘a’? 5) After an extended advertising campaign, the “Don’t Kick Your Poodle” Organization hopes to reduce poodle abuse by 15%. If last year there were 548 incidents, how many would there be this year?
