DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES 6.22 ND YEAR

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES? -Demonstrative adjectives describes the location of a NOUN in relation to a person -Demonstrative adjectives in English are “This” “That” and “That over there” -For example: -This book, that chair, that table over there -When we say “This,” we are implying that the object is relatively close to the person speaking. -When we say “that,” we are implying that the object is a bit further away from the person speaking. -When we say “that over there” we are implying that the object may be some distance, across the room, perhaps from the person speaking.

WHAT ARE THEY IN SPANISH? Masculine SingularPlural Este (this)Estos (these) Ese (that)Esos (those) Aquel (that over there)Aquellos (those over there) Notice there are NO accent marks!

WHAT ARE THEY IN SPANISH Feminine SingularPlural Esta (this)Estas (these) Esa (that)Esas (those) Aquella (that over there)Aquellas (Those over there) Notice there are NO accent marks! This and These have “T’s” That and Those don’t The ones with “A” are far away!

WHAT ABOUT DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS? -Demonstrative pronouns are used in place of the adjective and the noun. -For example, saying “can you give me this one?” is a use of a demonstrative pronoun. -When demonstrative pronouns are used this way, they have an accent mark over the “e”. SingularPlural Éste, éstaÉstos, éstas Ése, ésaÉsos, ésas Aquél, aquéllaAquéllos, aquéllas Notice these have accent marks!!

MORE DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS -There are also demonstrative pronouns that refer to ideas or unidentified things. -There is no specific gender. -For example, “this is important.” – Esto es importante -Or “What is that?”--- ¿Que es eso? -Or “What is that over there?”-- ¿Qué es aquello? -When demonstrative pronouns are used this way, there is no accent mark. -Notice that the form is a little bit different.
