André Augustinus 5 March 2007 Infrastructure status

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Infrastructure status  Racks  Power  Cables  Interlocks  Network

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Racks [cooling & mechanics]  All racks in UX and CR4 are prepared Turbine, heat exchanger, air deflector are mounted Few turbines still missing Adapted to future content of each rack Any object that would significantly obstruct the vertical airflow is placed above turbine or below deflector (and will not be cooled!) If you have more of these that we did not know of: either make them transparent to airflow, or rack has to be modified (need to empty the rack) Water cooling is operational for all racks Hydraulic connection of devices done by installation team (Philippe Bouvier) Give some advance warning, please

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Racks [cooling & mechanics] Installation accessories are available at Point 2 Slides, nuts and bolts etc. Installation is detector responsibility; we provide ‘best effort’ assistance Contact us for any ‘non standard’ mounting Non standard, special equipment (e.g. “TOF crate” for T0) Special mounting of standard equipment (e.g. SSD Easy crates)

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Racks [monitoring]  All racks are equipped with monitoring system ELMB based, located in turbine chassis  Monitors status of the rack Turbines running, temperature, rear door, thermoswitch  Interface provided centrally  CR4 being commissioned UX (c-area) 1-2 weeks; waiting for cable Rest of UX 3-4 weeks (cables permitting)

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Racks [protection] All racks are equipped with a protection system  Temperature: A thermoswitch (turbine chassis) will switch off the power to the rack in case of overheating  Smoke: A smoke detector (turbine chassis) will switch off the power to the rack upon detection of smoke  Fire fighting (UX C-area only): A CO 2 fire extinguishing system will release CO 2 in the rack in case of fire

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Power  Power connections of your equipment in the racks: All ‘big consumers’ will be connected directly to power distribution unit at top of rack (“Polish boxes”) Wiener LV and VME, CAEN 48V supplies (tri) Protected by 16A circuit breaker (3 per rack) If you provide us with the power cords we will connect them

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Power All other equipment will be connected through power strip(s) mounted in the racks With IEC320 sockets Limited to 10A per socket Power cords (1 to 5m) available from CERN stores ( A) Not allowed to connect ‘portable equipment’ (laptop, scope, soldering iron etc.); thus no need to make ‘adapters’ Use ‘wall outlets’ for this (swiss type) These are protected (30mA differential)

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Power control  Each rack is powered from a single power unit So called “Hazemeyer” Two racks on a power unit in CR4 Limited to 32A Remote control and monitoring (provided centrally)

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Power  Note that all power in the racks is switched off Each power unit is “consigné” For safety reasons  Before first power on a procedure has to be followed Documentation of the installation Inspection of the installation Contact Marc Tavlet for details

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Cables  Some control cables are taken care of by us: Wiener VME crate control (CANbus) Being installed Iseg HV crates (CANbus) Installed Control cable for Easy system (from branch controller (A1676) in mainframe to Easy crate; CAEN specific bus) Being installed; HMPID already done Connection between crates is detector responsibility Flat cable if within rack; 25-pair shielded cable if outside rack We can help you, but you’ll have to ask…

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Cabling for CAEN Easy  48V service power  To power control part of the Easy crates/modules  Propose to add small power supply in same rack as branch controller  We will take care of PS and cabling © CAEN Taken care of by DCS In UX racks In CR racks

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Cabling for ELMBs  ELMB needs CANbus and power Brought to the first ELMB in your chain in a single cable Central power supply units in CR3 (close to your PCs) Some are being installed (e.g. DCS, TPC), others wait definition of final position of first ELMB (‘ node’ in cable database speak) We will contact you to check, detector by detector Cable is available at point 2 We will take care of installation From this point onwards installation is detector responsibility

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop ELMB system  We provide the ‘patchbox’ from big to small cable  Recommended cable for ELMB daisy-chain is CANbus cable (contact me for wiring details) CAN power crate [in CR3] ELMB [on detector] CANbus Power patchbox CANbus & Power [in same cable] to Sensors Defined/delivered by central DCS team Guidelines by central DCS team Rack mounted PCs With Systec USB-CAN Interface box [in CR3]

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop ELMB accessories Please contact us for the following:  Y-cables, for easy daisy chaining  120Ω termination, on last ELMB  Alu or Inox DIN rail, for ELMB mounting (steel: )  Connection blocks for sensor cabling

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Cabling for interlocks We will take care of:  Interlock cables from gas system to HV system Being installed  Interlock cables from cooling plant to LV system Cannot be installed yet (missing cable trays on A side) Need more input from some detectors You will be contacted  Interlock cables to cooling plant From DSS, to stop cooling plant on detection of leak

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Cabling for interlocks Detector responsibility:  Distribution of interlock signal to equipment in the same location  Cabling of the detector inputs to DSS From sensor to DSS system E.g. pressure sensors for TPC, TRD; temperature sensors for SPD, SSD, Muon

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop DSS extension Optical fibers Local DSS network Profibus Operator gateway CPU External crates (I/O) SX2 CR4 UX External crates (I/O)  The DSS system will be extended (in UX) for the use by detector interlocks

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Network  Whole network is installed and operational, since January 2007 DCS network in racks (UX, CR and SG) DCS network in ALICE control room (ACR) GPN network outlets on the walls, or outside racks (UX, CR, SX and SG) Wireless GPN network (UX, CR and SX) DAQ and HLT networks (CR1 and CR2)  This should be sufficient for the commissioning and first months of operation Any extension requests will be collected, and installed during next shutdown

André Augustinus 5 March 2007ALICE DCS Workshop Network – Netgear  Netgear switches (for DCS boards/RCU) Installed for TRD and TPC (~35 units) Others ‘on request’ In order not be in the way for cabling work Give us a few days advance warning  Connectivity: Individual connection per switch for TRD Others 1 connection per group of switches TPC requested 2 nd connection for redundancy  Who is doing what: Connection up to Netgear is done by DCS Connection from Netgear to detector is detector responsibility
