GCSE Humanities

Do you wish to… Study a new subject which is relevant to what is happening in the world around you Have the knowledge to make informed decisions about controversial and contemporary issues Have the opportunity to have your say Become an expert in a chosen topic?

If the answer is ‘Yes’ consider Humanities GCSE. This course is not like the Humanities courses you have already studied. The course consists of 4 units within which you will study key questions. For example: Unit 1 Culture and Beliefs Unit 2 Environmental Issues Unit 3 Conflict and Co-operation Unit 4 Family and Socialisation

Unit 1 Culture and belief Are we a product of Nature or Nurture? How do multicultural societies interact? Is capital punishment murder by the state?

Unit 2 Environmental issues How can Amazonia be developed in a sustainable way? Is it possible to “Think global by acting local”? How can the UK become self sufficient in energy? How effective are environmental pressure groups?

Unit 3 Conflict and Co- operation What are the causes of conflict in the local community? Why did Britain become involved in the Gulf and Iraq War? How can the courts and international organisations resolve disputes?

Unit 4 Family and Socialisation How are attitudes to marriage and divorce changing? Roles within the family. Does the “New Man” exist? What challenges will an increasingly elderly population present to the family and society?

Assessment: Paper 1 (37.5%) based upon units 1-2 Paper 2 (37.5%) based on units 4-5 Humanities investigation (25%) This is an investigation consisting of one assignment, for example,' Should we recycle more?’ ‘What was the impact of the Gulf war?’ ‘Are children better off with 2 parents?’ This will be completed over 4 hours in lesson time.

As you can see the course covers highly significant issues at an individual, local, national and international level. It will equip you with the knowledge to make your own opinions and to study any of the social studies at a higher level. In class you will be encouraged to discuss, debate and work on research assignments. All resources are constantly updated to inform you of the current global situation.
