What is it? A way to show off your media production skills to the school and beyond. Open to all K-12 students. You can enter as one student, a group of students, a class, or a student organization Three levels: school, county, and state Beyond the three levels- International Student Media Festival

What are the rules? 1. Participants must be students. 2. All entries must be produced exclusively by students. 3. Entries are classified by the grade of the student(s) entering. 4. Any entry completed after last year’s festival (March 2010) is eligible. 5. Entries may be on any suitable theme or subject. 6. All entries must follow the guidelines set out.

How are projects graded? Each of the 3 judges uses a rubric Content & Organization- 40 points Clear purpose, creativity and originality, and organization are graded Technical Quality- 40 points Neatness, quality of audio, colors General Effectiveness- 20 points Overall, did it capture the judge’s interest and did it meet its stated purpose?

How do you advance to the next level of competition? The judges score sheets are averaged together. That score puts projects into certain categories: Participation: Merit: Superior: To advance in the competition your project must score in the Superior range.

Important Dates The MMS Media festival is February 25. (Projects due by Feb. 22) The Liberty County Media Festival is March 18. The Georgia State Media Festival is April 29.

Copyright All parts of a project should be student created! If you use any pictures or sound from another source it must be within Fair Use Guidelines. The Bottom Line is- It is best for students to do their own original art work and music. They will do better in the competition. Title should be given at the beginning of the project. Credits must be given for information, pictures, etc... Very Important Information!!!

Important Info Except for website, all must be submitted on CD or DVD. Judges only view the first 7 minutes, so don’t make it any longer than that.

Animation Animation includes hand-drawn or computer created entries on video or computer. Animation includes three-dimensional items like clay, objects, or 3-D models on computer or video tape. Student Sample projects

Live Action Videotape Videotaped dramas, comedies, documentaries, commercials, news shows, talk shows, interviews, instructional presentations, etc. There is usually a host, instructor, actor, and/or narrator. A computer can be used to edit the film.

Interactive Stills Includes images that are viewed in an order chosen by the viewer. Uses navigation buttons and/or menus to enable the viewer to select a path. Text, music, video clips and narration may be incorporated into this type of production.

Mixed Media When two different modes of production are used. For example mixing animation with live action or mixing computer generated images with 3D animation. PLUS

Podcast A digital audio program that can be downloaded and played on a computer or digital audio player. It can be a stand- alone item or one of a series. Files should be in mp3 or mp4. RSS files not required. Must be available for download from the Internet, but must also be included on a backup CD or DVD. No video podcasts.

Sequential Stills A series of still images from slides, photographs, still video, or digital images produced using programs such as PowerPoint and Quicktime. Regular- a collections of still images displayed through a program like PowerPoint or PhotoStory. Electronic Book- must be an original student story and artwork. Electronic Photographic Essay- a collection of original photographs on one theme with or without captions.

Website MUST be online. If advancing to the ISMF must remain online until after 2010 ISMF. MUST include a site map. Site-based- tells about a place the student has visited. Personal Website- reflects on the creators personalities and interest. Instructional Website- teaches or informs on a topic. Entertainment Website- covers any entry that does not fit into the prior categories. Synthasite is a great free web tool to try!

Your entry should have a purpose... Story: To tell a story, serious or lighthearted, fiction or non-fiction. Informational: To inform, but not persuade opinions. Documentary: To document real events, topics, and people while being objective. Instructional: To teach something by going beyond simply presenting facts. Persuasive/PSA: To present an idea, product, concept in a credible way so as to change an opinion. Entertainment: To entertain and amuse.

To Enter: See Mrs. Dover in the Media Center for a Media Festival packet. This packet should be fully filled out and signed. It must be returned to the Media Center, along with your project, by Tuesday, March 22.
