Notes le 23 novembre Les pronoms le, la, et les Le, la and les are direct object pronouns. They replace direct object nouns. A direct object receives the action of a verb.

The pronoun le (l’) replaces singular, masculine, direct object nouns. Tu connais ce garçon? -Oui, je le connais. (Do you know this boy? -Yes, I know him.) Tu veux voir ce film? - Oui, je veux le voir. (Do you want to see this film? - Yes, I want to see it.) Tu aimes ce livre? Oui, je l’aime beaucoup.) (Do you like this book? - Yes, I like it a lot.)

The pronoun la (l’) replaces singular, feminine, direct object nouns. Tu connais cette fille? - Oui, je la connais bien. (Do you know this girl? - Yes, I know her well.) Tu veux voir cette pièce? - Oui, je veux la voir. (Do you want to see this play? - Yes, I want to see it.) Tu admires cette actrice? - Oui, je l’admire. (Do you admire this actress? - Yes, I admire her.)

The pronoun les replaces plural, masculine and feminine direct object nouns. Tu admires les tableaux de Picasso? - Oui, je les admire. (Do you admire Picasso’s paintings? - Yes, I admire them.) Tu connais ces actrices? Non, je ne les connais pas. (Do you know these actresses? - No, I don’t know them.)

The pronouns le, la and les come right before the conjugated verb or right before the infinitive if there is one. Je le vois. Je ne le vois pas. Je veux le voir. Je ne veux pas le voir.
