 O Infinitive é a forma original do verbo, o infinitivo. Pode ser usado com ou sem o “to”.

 COM O TO:  1. Após adjetivos, advérbios e substantivos:  For more than 20 years, the prosecutor who convicted Cameron Todd Willingham of murdering his three young daughters has insisted that the authorities made no deals to secure the testimony of the jailhouse informer who told jurors that Willingham confessed the crime to him.  Since Willingham was executed in 2004, officials have continued to defend the account of the informer, Johnny E. Webb, even as a series of scientific experts have discredited the forensic evidence that Willingham might have deliberately set the house fire in which his toddlers were killed.

 2. Após os verbos ask, decide, expect, hope, invite, promise, refuse, want, wish:  Webb admitted that he took anti-depressants for post-traumatic stress syndrome after being sexually assaulted in jail. He said that he decided to testify because his conscience was bothering him after Willingham confessed to him.

 SEM O TO:  1. Após os verbos modais e os verbos let e make:  This time, Judge Douglas, Sheriff Cotten and Jackson all insisted that Webb’s sentence was excessive and he should be released.  Please, let me go.

 2. Após as conjunções but e except:  There is nothing to do, but leave.  She is a very kind person, except that she is not.

 É a forma –ing do verbo. Usa-se Gerund:

 1. Após preposições:  Despite the high-level attention, Webb grew impatient. He warned Pearce that he was thinking of contacting the news media because the prosecution had failed to help him after he provided critical testimony.  “He had his mind set on helping them,” she said.

 2. Após os verbos admit, avoid, appreciate, consider, delay, detest, deny, dislike, enjoy, escape, excuse, fancy, finish, keep, mention, miss, practice, quit, resist, suggest, understand:  Jackson — who was elected as a Navarro County judge in November 1996 and retired in 2012 — does not deny going out of his way to help Webb.  Jackson then wrote to the Huntsville warden. “I hate to keep bothering you about Johnny Webb problems, however, I received a letter from him alleging that a correctional officer... has suggested he recant his testimony,”

 O verbo stop pode ser seguido por Infinitive ou Gerund, mas com significados distintos:  She stopped to smoke X She stopped smoking
