Overview  Minimum Qualifications Basics  Who do you want to hire?  Strategies for recruiting the faculty you want  Strategies for hiring the faculty you want  Discussions/questions

What is required?  Ed Code – Minimum Qualifications must be established Non-credit and credit faculty Counselors Librarians

Thus, the “Disciplines List”  Credit 1.Masters 2.Non-masters + experience, specific AA or BA 3.Non-masters + experience, any AA or BA

Thus, the “Disciplines List”  Non-credit  Others - Administrators, Learning Center Coordinators, Health Services Professionals, Apprenticeship Instructors, DSP&S Counselors, Work Experience Coordinators, Faculty Interns, EOPS..

Local Minimum Qualifications?  Can a district have its own minimum qualifications?  Yes – sort of...  A district can establish additional qualification that are more rigorous – a higher minimum.

Examples  A higher degree could be required.  Some degree options specified in the minimum qualifications might be excluded.  Credit Vs Noncredit  Some disciplines not used or hired.  Specific experience requirements.

Equivalencies  Title 5 Section May hire an individual who “possesses qualifications that are at least equivalent to the [state] minimum qualifications.” “The process, as well as criteria and standards…shall be developed and agreed upon jointly by …the [local] governing board and the [local] academic senate.”

General Considerations  Meeting General Education requirements  Meeting Subject Area Knowledge  Same degree but the degree title varies  Teaching Experience  The equality of Work Experience and Subject Area Knowledge

Who do you want to hire?  What should you consider when determining who to hire?

Who do you want to hire?  Who are your students? Basic skill needs Demographics  What goals do your students have?  What do your students need?  Who are your existing faculty?

How do you consider the following?  Students with basic skill needs are more diverse that the general CCC population  Noncredit students represent more diverse student populations  How do you hire faculty who can relate to and best serve your students?

What about Cultural Competence  How important is it for faculty to be culturally competent?  Are your hiring committees trained in cultural competence?  Do you ask candidates questions that would illustrate cultural competence?

EEO Plans  Have you seen your college’s plan?  Do you know what is says about Training hiring committees? Recruitment? Seeking diverse pools?
