District Information Technology Update Report Late August 2014 Complied By: Stephen Torrey

End of Life for Windows XP & Office 2003  Microsoft ended support of Windows XP & Office 2003 on April 8 th At that time we had over 800 district computers running Windows XP and Office Since XP has ended, we have removed all XP Based computers from the district and upgraded to Windows 8.1 Professional as our new OS.  Office 2003 was upgraded to Office 2015 which includes MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, and One Note.

 On April 8 th 2014, the district had ~800 computers connected to our network. The computers, on average, were 8-14 years old.  Network authentication was being managed by a Novell Netware Environment that had its last major upgrade in the summer of  We have since upgraded over 250 district owned computers. These upgraded computers now have 120GB Crucial SSD, a minimum of 4GB of DDR2 Memory, and the Windows 8.1 Pro Operating System.  We purchased an additional 275 brand new Lenovo M73 ThinkCentre computers. These computers came equipped with 120GB SSD, 4GB of DDR3 memory, Wireless A/C, Bluetooth, and USB 3.0.  The average age of the computers located throughout the district today is 2-3 years old.

 We removed the entire Netware environment and installed new Windows Server 2012 Domain Controllers in each building.  We virtualized our utility servers onto a new Hyper-V Environment at the main Data Center. This Virtual Environment will house servers such as WSUS, AD Certificate Authority, Moodle, and SMTP.  We also upgraded the server which holds Infinite Vision, giving administration personnel a more robust and secure environment to manage the accounting databases

 We are continuing our efforts in upgrading our Server Rooms and behind the scenes infrastructure across the district.  We began the infrastructure upgrade at the DPHS Campus.  Building was re-wired with new CAT6a for Data, Voice, and WAP.  New 10Gbps Fiber backbone interconnecting the three main switch closets.  New Patch Panels were installed at switch locations throughout the building  Existing Computer Lab Data Drops were upgraded to CAT6 Keystones, with new Gang Boxes and Wiremold Channeling.  Installed 11 New Cisco 2960X-48-POE+ Layer 2 access switches  Installed New 2900 Series Router  Installed 2 New 5508X Wireless Controllers  Installed 54 New 2702 Series Wireless Access Points

 The second phase of the infrastructure upgrade took place inside the data center located at WVS.  We added a new Cisco 4500 Series Fiber Core and 2 New 2960X-49-POE+ Layer 2 Access Switches.  We added 2 new 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances (Active/Passive)  The upgrades at the Data Center allowed us to upgrade our internal and external bandwidth speeds across the entire district.  The higher bandwidth will allow the district to utilize precious virtual academic resources. These resources include Streaming Media, Cloud Based Software, and internal file sharing between users.  Prior to the refresh the district had an external internet speed of 30mbps, and an internal speed of 100mbps. We have now upgraded to an external speed of 250mbps, and an internal speed of 1000mbps.

What will be available on the first day of school?  All staff throughout the district will have an upgraded or new computer located on their desks  All computer labs throughout the district will have their original computer numbers restored for student access.  All library's throughout the district will have their original computer numbers restored for student access.  All computers will have full internet access restored to them

What’s Next?  We need to continue to replace outdated infrastructure throughout the district.  David Prouty High School needs a new VoIP telephone system purchased and installed.  Knox Trail Jr. High needs a complete infrastructure refresh to align with the current system in place at DPHS  East Brookfield Elementary School needs their switches configured for layered traffic, as well as implementation of Wireless Access Points and a VoIP phone system  Wire Village School needs new access level switches installed in IDF’s throughout the building, as well as implementation of Wireless Access Points and a VoIP phone system  Lake Street School needs a complete infrastructure refresh to align with the current system in place at DPHS
