MD80 N275 CLE MARCH 1997

Summary During landing roll at CLE on runway 5R, approx 2106 lcl time, aircraft weather vaned and skidded off the left side of the runway approx 3/4 of the way down the runway. The aircraft came to rest between taxiways R and A with MLG approx 30 yards off the runway hard surface, with the aircrafts nose approx 90 degrees from the runway heading.

Summary Weather at time of landing was reported to be winds 350 degrees at 13 knots, 1/2 mile visibility, snow and fog with approx 100 ft ceiling. Runway conditions were reported as slush with possible ice accumulation. Braking actions mentioned as fair to poor.

Summary Initial aircraft inspection by CLE maintenance crew chief revealed the RT MLG collapsed in to the wheel well. Approximately 80% of the right wing was resting on the ground / mud with apparent damage to both the inboard and outboard flaps. A strong odor of fuel indicated possible leak. No visual leak or spill noted due to the fire department saturating the right wing and surrounding areas with about inches of foam.

Summary Right wing tip was dug into the ground. Nose gear tires were approximately inches in the mud, and the left main gear was sunk up to the wheel hubs. Further detailed inspection was not possible because the fire department restricted access to the aircraft. 0015/6 FAA release aircraft 0430/6 ORD recovery team on site….
