Year 12 Parent Meeting A YEAR 12 SURVIVAL GUIDE

Year 12 is a big year, just like every year is a big year for our children.

Year 12 should NOT define a person. While choosing a pathway beyond year 12 is difficult, there are many available pathways. Access to these pathways is becoming more flexible and open over time.

Year 12 students need a normal year. How do you keep it normal?

Balance

Regular Sleep 9.25 hours a night

Study time (37.5 hours per week?) School - attend all lessons Home - at night and /or weekends

Good nutrition

Social Life In balance with the rest of their life

Regular exercise Sporting clubs often provide organised exercise and a social life. An individual exercise routine may be appropriate.

Downtime Time to relax – time to do anything or nothing

Family life Normal family expectations and commitments

Paid Work? Up to 12 hours per week

Spiritual Life

Trust that they can solve most of their own problems. (Wisdom is knowing when to hold back and when to intervene.)

There will be bumps Recognise that this is normal.

Seek out supports (for you and your child).  School – Tutor, subject teachers, Counsellors, etc  Family, friends and community
