Year 12 is a big year, just like every year is a big year for our children.
Year 12 should NOT define a person. While choosing a pathway beyond year 12 is difficult, there are many available pathways. Access to these pathways is becoming more flexible and open over time.
Year 12 students need a normal year. How do you keep it normal?
Balance
Regular Sleep 9.25 hours a night
Study time (37.5 hours per week?) School - attend all lessons Home - at night and /or weekends
Good nutrition
Social Life In balance with the rest of their life
Regular exercise Sporting clubs often provide organised exercise and a social life. An individual exercise routine may be appropriate.
Downtime Time to relax – time to do anything or nothing
Family life Normal family expectations and commitments
Paid Work? Up to 12 hours per week
Spiritual Life
Trust that they can solve most of their own problems. (Wisdom is knowing when to hold back and when to intervene.)
There will be bumps Recognise that this is normal.
Seek out supports (for you and your child). School – Tutor, subject teachers, Counsellors, etc Family, friends and community
