Electrons as Waves Sarah Allison Claire

Electrons as Waves De Broglie suggested that the only waves electrons emitted were in the space around an atomic nucleus. Electron waves could only exist at certain frequencies. According to E=hv, these frequencies corresponded to specific frequencies. Electrons can diffracted and electron beams can interfere with each other.

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle It is impossible to determine simultaneously both the position and velocity of an electron or any other particle.

The Schrödinger Wave Equation Quantization of electron energies was a natural outcome of Schrödinger’s equation. Quantization is where the electron can only exist at certain energy values. Together with Heisenberg's principle, this lead to the quantum theory. Quantum theory describes mathematically the wave properties of electrons and other very small particles. Electrons do not travel around the nucleus in neat orbits, but instead they exist in regions called orbitals.

Tying it all together: The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and The Schrödinger Wave Equation influenced the quantum theory which gives scientists a better understanding of how an atom functions, specifically that electrons are located in the electron cloud.
