China: At a Glance Population: 1.3 Billion - (1/5 of the world’s inhabitants) GDP: $1.65 Trillion (9.5% growth compared to U.S. growth of 4.4%) Per Capita GDP exceeded $1,000 for first time in 2003 GDP by sector agriculture: 13.8% industry:52.9% services:33.3% Higher education: In 1997, university enrollment in “regular higher education” stood at 3.2 million; by 2000, it had risen to 7 million. The Ministry of Education plans to have 16 million enrolled by 2010 (including distance and continuing education).
