Review Questions ANSWERS 1.If there are 7 chromosomes in a cell. Is it a gamete or a somatic cell? GAMETE- Somatic Cells have pairs of chromosomes so can’t be a somatic cell because the number of chromosomes is odd

2.If there are 14 chromosomes in a cell. Is it a gamete or a somatic cell? Can’t tell. Need more information. If it is a gamete, there would be 28 chromosomes in the zygote (fertilized egg) and body cells. If it is a somatic cell, there would be 14 chromosomes in cell (and 7 in the gamete).

3.Define fertilization. Sperm + egg restoring the diploid number.

4.How many pairs of chromsomes are in a zygote (fertilized human egg)? 23 pairs

5.How many pairs of chromsomes are in an unfertilized egg? 0 pairs- 23 single chromosomes (one of each homologous pair)

6.How does meiosis differ in males and females? Females- Oogenesis- 1 of 4 is viable egg. Less eggs produced in life than sperm. Males- Spermatogenesis- all 4 are viable sperm. More sperm produced in life than eggs.
