What is word and meaning? What the three main elements of them? 5

DIFFER OF WORD AND MEANING  Word is verbal symbols.  words express ourselves & give meaning to our lives and activities (connotation and denotation).  Meaning refers to something we can understand private and shared meaning. 6

7 SYMBOL AND REFERENTS Symbol: as something use for or regarded as representing something else ( events, actions, objects, person, or places). Referents: the object for which it stands. Concrete words Abstract words

DENOTATION & CONNOTATION Denotation refers dictionary meaning; the objective or descriptive meaning of a word. Connotation refers subjective meaning; one’s personal meaning for a word.  Connotation contains all these three: negative-positive connotation, culture and connotation, the semantic differential. 8

PRIVATE & SHARED MEANING Private meaning: assign the meaning without agreement. Shared meaning: let someone know it reference.  Overlapping codes and code switching: overlap code and shift in code. Let’s go home and watch TV, Go for a walk or go to cinema You are not stupid... 9
