Terrestrial Biomes Overview.
What are biomes? Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate, animals, and plants.

Why don’t polar bears live in the desert? Polar bears don’t live in the desert because they are adapted to very cold environments.
Chapter 2.4 BIOMES. Target 1 BIOME I will identify the main factors that are used to determine a biome. a) Climate which is based on: Temperature Precipitation.
Think back to ecosystems….

Biomes. Biomes are regions in the world that have their own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals.
Biomes. Tundra Abiotic: gets really cold, little rain, ground is permafrost. Vegetation - few trees, mainly grasses, bushes, and lichens Animals - arctic.
Ecosystems & Organisms. Organisms live and survive by interacting with the living and non-living elements of their ecosystem. Ecosystems have different.
The biosphere is divided into major areas called biomes.
BIOMES. What is a biome?  A group of ecosystems with similar climate and organisms.  Temperature and rainfall determine the plants that will grow. 

Organisms and its Environments We discovered: How biosphere is organized What Earth’s biomes are How Earth’s biomes differ

Biosphere It’s part of the Earth that can support living things

Ecosystems A biome is a large group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. Ecosystems are different areas of the world that share similar characteristics. Each ecosystem species have unique adaptations that help them survive the conditions in their environment.

Grasslands Grasslands get about 60 cm of precipitation a year. The summers are hot and winters are cold. Rhinoceros, giraffes, bison, zebras are some of the largest animals on grasslands.

Tundra It’s found at the far northern parts of Earth. It’s cold and dry. Temperatures are as low as -40° C. Caribou, polar bears are among the common animals.

Deciduous Forest They’re located in areas between the Arctic and the equator. These forests have four seasons. The most common plants are oaks, maple, etc. Songbirds, deer, bears, and racoons are some common forest animals. Deciduous Forest

Desert Deserts are dry, but not all deserts are hot. Daytime temperatures can be as high as 38° C Some desert plants include cacti.

Rainforest They are found near the equator. They are warm and rainy all year with temperatures between 20° C and 25° C.

Taiga It covers the largest area of any type of biome on Earth. A few deciduous trees and small shrubs also grow here. Squirrels, birds, and insects live here; also deer, wolves, grizzly bears and hawks.

WE LEARNT THAT ANIMALS LIVE IN ENVIRONMENTS ACCORDING TO THEIR CHARACTERISTICS. WE ALSO LEARNT THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH ENVIRONMENT.
