Identifying The Gifted Einstein was four years old before he could speak and seven before he could read. Isaac Newton did poorly in grade school. When Thomas Edison was a boy, his teachers told him he was too stupid to learn anything. A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he had “no good ideas.” Leo Tolstoy flunked out of college. Fred Waring was once rejected from high school chorus. Winston Churchill failed the sixth grade.

Program Options K-2: Consultation w/classroom teacher 3: Enrichment Plus / Explorers 4-5: Resource / AG Elective 6-8: Course selection in Mathematics Cluster grouping in Language Arts 9-12: Course selection K-2 Consultation: AG teacher consults with regular education teacher in collaboratively planning units and in securing materials. The classroom teacher is responsible for direct instruction.

Identification Process All Wake County 3rd Grade students are screened Parent nomination Teacher nomination Student nomination Nominations can be made at any grade level yearly. Transfer students(discuss individually with parents). Students who were identified in a bona fide AG program in another district or state will be referred for AG evaluation.

Nomination Windows Nominations are accepted at any time by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBC-GE). Nominations are reviewed each semester (prior to the testing deadline). A nomination received after the testing deadline will be considered the next semester. Testing Window Dates: First Semester July 1, 2010- Aug. 13, 2010 Second Semester Jan. 1, 2011- Feb. 12, 2011 Presenter needs to have the dates for the nominations and testing windows. Testing window dates have been shared and posted with office staff, counselors, and classroom teachers. Testing window dates should be communicated to parents in school newsletter (with principal’s permission). Testing windows are established by each school and may vary, with approval of the AG office.

Referral If a student is referred for further evaluation, the following areas are considered: Current aptitude scores Current achievement scores Classroom behaviors Classroom performance Interests Motivation SBC-GE reviews the complete profile. Classroom behaviors, performance, interests, and motivation are reflected on the parent and teacher checklists. Have a sample copy of the checklist available.
