The Participant as an Individual: Environment, Risk and Challenge GCSE PE Year 10 The Participant as an Individual: Environment, Risk and Challenge

AIMS: The aspects of the environment that can affect participants and their performance The ways in which these factors have an actual effect How access to facilities can reduce the effect of the environment The aspect of challenge that is present in physical activity The need for carrying out risk assessment The importance of being aware of risk control

ENVIRONMENT It is a factor we can and can not control. WEATHER is a factor you may have no control over, but a professional performer might be able go to a country which is suitable! TRAINING –Marathon runners need to run!! If there is snow or ice they might not be able to! COMPETING – Many activities stop if weather is poor

POLLUTION Can affect both training and competition because its a serious health risk! If pollution levels are high then performing outdoors will not be possible. Training would happen indoors, where there is air conditioning or climate control

ALTITUDE This is height above sea level. This can be a real benefit! Living and training at high altitude all the time can be a real advantage for someone if they take part in endurance events

HUMIDITY Relates to the amount of water vapour that is in the air. Humidity combined with heat makes conditions very difficult for performers to keep their bodies cool enough to avoid dehydration. TERRAIN – Landscape may be crucial to your sport, e.g. You would need slopes and snow as a skier and sea and surf as a surfer!
