BiogasHeat Development of sustainable heat markets for biogas plants in Europe IEE/11/025/SI Project Duration: – Status: 18 May 2012

Contract No:IEE/11/025/SI | 05/04/2012 – 04/04/2015 Project summary ACTIVITIES Enforcement of national and EU biogas heat use policy Collection and demonstration of biogas heat use good practice examples Implementation of feasibility studies and field tests Support to real project implementation OUTCOME More efficient and optimized heat use from existing and future biogas plants RESULTS Good practice examples and handbook on biogas heat use New strategies and business models for enhanced heat use from biogas plants Real business cases and field tests in cooperation with biogas and heat market actors 2

Contract No:IEE/11/025/SI | 05/04/2012 – 04/04/2015 Background In many European countries the production and use of biogas is recognised as suitable and sustainable energy option in a renewable energy mix Mostly biogas is used to produce electricity in combined heat and power (CHP) plants However, in many cases the heat from the CHP plant is not used, but wasted. This inefficiency in energy use is a bottleneck in current biogas production, causing macroeconomic and microeconomic losses and challenges in an overall increasing land use competition. New plants, existing plants and plants undergoing renovation or extension in emerging European biogas markets need concrete solutions to efficiently use the heat BiogasHeat project address the problem of how to efficiently use the heat from biogas plants 3

Contract No:IEE/11/025/SI | 05/04/2012 – 04/04/2015 Objectives and main steps Main objectives of BiogasHeat are: -To enable economic and sustainable utilisation of heat from existing and future biogas plants, which is currently wasted -To increase capability and capacity in biogas heat utilisation in project target countries and abroad This will be achieved by: -Identification and description of good practice biogas heat use examples and development of handbook on sustainable heat use from biogas plants -Development of promising business models and entrepreneurial strategies for biogas heat use, including feasibility studies and analysis of technical options in cooperation with biogas and heat market actors -Field testing of models and strategies in real projects -Round table discussions and workshops for policy makers, authorities and biogas plant operators -Coaching events and European workshop to transfer experience of developing sustainable heat markets for biogas plants to other European countries 4

Contract No:IEE/11/025/SI | 05/04/2012 – 04/04/2015 Expected results At least 20 good practice biogas heat use examples Handbook on “Sustainable Heat use from Biogas Plants” At least 90 pre-feasibility studies on strategies and business models for the utilization of heat from biogas plants Ten business cases on heat use from biogas plants developed and field tested Direct technical assistance to biogas heat market players through Helpdesk and FAQ list Recommendations to national policy makers for the enforcement of heat use from biogas plants and regional/national roundtable discussions International workshop and 10 coaching events to other European regions European conference and 18 national workshops disseminating the main project results and lessons learnt 5
