Project Management Requirements Prof. Ralph V. Locurcio, PE
Design 1 – Prepare proposal Purpose is to win the design Proposal must state why your team is best Must include a Project Management Plan in the proposal Must include your proposed fee for design Design 2 – Design the project Verify the 5% stage Design 15, 50, 95, 100% Develop engineering details & construction drawings Manage & report on 50, 95,100% Integrate all design elements into unified project Prepare display for Design Showcase in April Estimate cost of 15, 50, 95,100% Prepare and include a construction schedule Turn in written report
1.Title Page – follow instructions 2.Letter of Transmittal – transmits your fee/price to client 3.Table of Contents – separate tab for each section 4.Introduction Problem Statement, Background & Scope of Work - what’s included & what’s not Discussion of Site, Project Maps – where is it, geometry - area map & site map Team Organization – who will do it 5. Project Management Plan Work Breakdown Structure & Design Budget Project Flow Diagram – flow of design tasks over time (Draft-1) Design Schedule (MS Project) – (Draft-2) Construction Cost Estimate – cost to actually build the project Conceptual in Proposal, 5% & 15% design Detailed at 50%, 95% & 100% in Design-2 Construction schedule at 50% – when project will be built
6.Project Base & Layout Map Base Map shows data on boundaries and major features Layout adds “proposed” location and size of engineering features: roads, piping systems, retention ponds, etc. All team members should participate in these drawings 7.Design Investigation Report Written Technical Report – consult with engineering advisor Include such items as: Engineering problem(s) to be solved in the design Logic of location & size of engineering features Design options considered; cite the pros & cons of each Applicable codes, ordinances or criteria that will control the design Cite all technical information to be used in the design Design decision – what engineering design method will be used and why Constraints – cite any political, environmental or physical limitations 8. Appendices & List of References
They enable you to be proactive rather than reactive…

Don’t forget To update duration At each % stage!!! WBS
Don’t forget To show totals At each % stage!!! Don’t forget To update duration At each % stage!!! Budget
Conceptual Construction Cost Based on historical data Itemize components: w&s, structure, roads, etc. Use cost per SF or unit pricing data Data from similar project Be sure to update for location & timing Example: construct a 300-bed college FIT Based on 2008 UCF $25,000/bed Conceptual cost = $7,500,000 x.83 x 1.1 = $6,847,500
Detailed Construction Cost – 50%, 95%, 100% Due in Design-2 reports Based on actual design & engineering data Itemize components: w&s, structure, roads, etc. More detail as design is completed Obtain pricing for elements online, RS Means, other. Include all cost elements: materials, labor, logistics See template; all use same format Be sure to summarize cost of entire project Should be 90-95% accurate
