What does a practical nurse do Provide basic personal care to patients, such as bathing, dressing wounds, treating bedsores. Administer medication and observe and record reactions. Check blood pressure and vital signs, collect blood and urine samples Keep track of patient records. Assist Registered Nurses and Doctors

Required education To be a practical nurse one must have a high school diploma or GED. Complete a one or two year course at a vocational college or approved practical nursing program. Become registered in your province and complete the Canadian practical nurse registration examination. Useful courses to take in high school would be: Biology, Chemistry, English and Math.
