Differ from seedless plants because… – Produce seeds, which nourish and protect young sporophytes – Gametophytes form within sporophyte – Sperm forms within.

Kingdom Plantae Seed Plants Mr. Skirbst Life Science Topic 15

Seed Plants

-Do not require standing water to reproduce

Seed Plants -Do not require standing water to reproduce -Encase young plants to protect & feed

Seed Structure Consists of: 1- seed coat 2- young plant (embryo) 3- stored food (cotyledon)

Cotyledon Monocot – one cotyledon Dicot – two cotyledons

Reproductive Structures ovule -

Reproductive Structures ovule – female structure containing egg cells pollen -

Reproductive Structures ovule – female structure containing egg cells pollen – male structure containing sperm cells (often with spikes on surface)

Types of Plants gymnosperms -

Types of Plants gymnosperms – “naked” seeds (not covered by ovary)

Types of Plants gymnosperms – “naked” seeds (not covered by ovary) cones – location of reproductive structure (ex. Pine trees)

Types of Plants angiosperms– seed contained in “vessel” (seeds covered by ovary)

Types of Plants angiosperms– seed contained in “vessel” (seeds covered by ovary) flowers – location of reproductive structures (a.k.a. flowering plants)

Gymnosperms 4 phyla:

Gymnosperms 4 phyla: 1- cycads – tropical, palmlike

Gymnosperms 4 phyla: 1- cycads – tropical, palmlike 2- ginkoes – ornamental (seeds stink!)

Gymnosperms 4 phyla: 1- cycads – tropical, palmlike 2- ginkoes – ornamental 3- conifers – cone-bearing, evergreen (like pine)

Gymnosperms 4 phyla: 1- cycads – tropical, palmlike 2- ginkoes – ornamental 3- conifers – cone-bearing 4- gnetophytes – blended characteristics of gymno & angiosperms

Angiosperms -Largest plant group in the world

Angiosperms -Largest plant group in the world -Also called “flowering” plants

Flowers -Contain the reproductive organs

Flowers -Stamen (male)

Flowers -Pistil (female)

Tropism -A plant’s response to a stimulus

Tropism -A plant’s response to a stimulus Response – a reaction to a stimulus

Tropism -A plant’s response to a stimulus Response – a reaction to a stimulus Stimulus – something causing a reaction

2 Types of Tropism 1- Phototropism -

2 Types of Tropism 1- Phototropism – a plant’s response to light

2 Types of Tropism 2- Gravitropism -

2 Types of Tropism 2- Gravitropism – a plant’s response to gravity

Tropism Positive tropism – response toward a stimulus

Tropism Positive tropism – response toward a stimulus Negative tropism – response away from a stimulus
