Direct Quotes Enver Pasha One of the triumvirate rulers publicly declared on 19 May The Ottoman Empire should be cleaned up of the Armenians and the Lebanese. We have destroyed the former by the sword, we shall destroy the latter through starvation. Lord Robert Cecil Under-secretary of state for foreign affairs (House of Commons, Hansard (5th series), Vol. LXXV, 16 November 1915, Cols ) I think it may be said, without the least fear of exaggeration, that no more horrible crime has been committed in the history of the world... This is a premeditative crime determined on long ago... It was a long-considered, deliberate policy to destroy and wipe out of existence the Armenians in Turkey. It was systematically carried out. It was ordered from above... Source: le=Main_Page Source: le=Main_Page le=Main_Page le=Main_Page

Summary The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the 20 th century and it occurred in 1915 during WWI. This Genocide killed about 2 million people. It was mostly planned by the Turkish government against the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire. It was stated that Nationalism could have been a cause, because prior to that, the Turkish people and the Armenians lived in relative harmony in the Ottoman Empire (Kojian). They began to have conflicts because Armenians were the only major Christian minority group. They wanted more independence (like the Greeks received), while the Turks wanted more land and pictured their empire spreading across to Turkish speaking parts of Central Asia. Armenian’s were the only group in the way of that land, so the nationalist Turks wanted to get rid of them (Kojian). The Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), also known as the Young Turks, is a political party in the Ottoman Empire and they made the decision to have genocide against the Armenians. Its military leaders were Mehmet Talaat, Ismail Enver, and Ahmed Jermal. They tortured massacred, starved, abducted, and stranded thousands of Armenians in the middle on the desert to die (ANI). Also, the Young Turks had a secret outfit that they called the Special Organization. This was the project of mass slaughter of the deported Armenians. Fortunately, all these murderers along with the Ottoman government and many administrators responsible, were all indicted for their crimes committed at the end of the war (ANI). After the genocide, the three Young Turks leaders were all executed by Armenians (Kojian). The commemorate date is April 24; that was the day the Turkish government arrested 200 Armenian leaders in Constantinople and then sent them to prison and executed them. The Minister of War of the Young Turks had prior to that date disarmed the Armenian recruits in the Ottoman Army. Also, there was a great reduction in the male population of Armenians from reducing them on purpose by “drafting” them to help in the war. However, they later killed or worked the men to death. So the women, children, and elders were forced out thinking they were going to temporary homes, but were actually put on death marches (Kojian). Then with the arrests of the Armenian leaders on April 24, 1915, the true motive of what the Young Turks were trying to accomplish had become clear and was known as the start of the Armenian Genocide (ANI).
