Italy By: Ani Ponugoti

History Italian history is said to have started in the 20 th century B.C. There were three different tribes, the Oscans, Umbrians, and Latins. Latin later became the most powerful type of culture, and Rome was a powerful place in 350 B.C. The Roman Empire later took over Western Europe and the Mediterranean for many centuries. After the fall of Rome in A.D. 476, Italy became broken up. Parts of Italy were given to the Spanish, the Austrian, and Napoleon I’s empire. The “New Kingdom of Italy,” modernized Italy quickly and helped it get back together after it’s fall.

Government Italy is a Parliamentary Republic, which means the head of state, who is usually a prime minister, is the head of the party with the most members in parliamentary. Italy’s prime minister is Matteo Renzi. Italy’s president is Giorgio Napolitano, even though the prime minister is more important in this type of government. The government has two houses; the Chamber of Deputies, and the Senate of the Republic. These two houses have equal power. The prime minister and the cabinet is appointed by the president.

Economy Italy’s GDP (Purchasing Power Parity,) is trillion. (Updated as of 2013.) Imports- Engineering products, chemicals, energy products, and tobacco. Exports- Clothing, motor vehicles, minerals, and tobacco. Main Export Partners- Germany, France, and United States. Main Import Partners- Germany, France, and China.

The background of this slide is a topographical map of Italy.

Culture Italy has not been taken over by the British, so it does not have an “Independence Day.” It does, however, have a “Republic Day.” Republic Day is celebrated on June 2 nd in Italy. Italy is into sports, fine cuisine, and arts. Italy is recognized for its talent in soccer. Italy’s team won the World Cup in Some of Italy’s wonderful food are, pasta, gelato, pizza, tiramisu, and espresso.
