The Office of Research CRC Grants Workshop 1 May 2008 W. Ross Ellington, Associate VP for Research & Greenberg Professor of Biological Science

What is sponsored research? Sponsored Research - Research conducted by University employees using any University space, facilities, materials, equipment, or property, and which is financed by contract payments, grants, or gifts from any source other than the University's funds. – FSU Office of Research

Why is Sponsored Research Important to FSU’s Mission? External grant funding is a means to an end, not the end in itself. The end, of course, is the support of advanced research, training of graduate and undergraduate students AND the creation and dissemination of NEW knowledge and creative products. External funding provides freedom and flexibility to the faculty member. External funding of graduate students frees State dollars for support of additional students and other worthwhile expenditures.

FSU has aspirations to join the ranks of the elite research and doctoral education universities in the nation The Pathways Initiative is using Association of American Universities membership indicators as benchmarks for assessing progress. External contract & grants awards and expenditures are phase 1 AAU indicators.

Encourage and facilitate our faculty’s efforts to obtain sponsored funding and to protect and commercialize FSU’s intellectual property. Strive to provide all needed support prior to and after receipt of funding while endeavoring to broaden the awareness of FSU’s research and creative talents locally and beyond. Work closely with faculty and others to identify, nurture and support research and creative activities across the disciplines. Mission Statement of the Office of Research
