KATHMANDU Kathmandu, where our group will take their first steps in Nepal, is a beautiful oasis nestled beneath the highest mountains on earth. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and is named after Kasthamandap, an imposing pagoda near Hanuman Lhoka Palace. The city was built in its present form by Gunakama Dev in 723 A.D. It is a bustling community filled with colorful music and scenery; holy temples and pagodas; and an eclectic mix of locals and foreigners. NAMCHE BAZAAR Namche Bazaar is the entrance to the Everest region. Situated at the base of the Khumbu Nepal range, Namche Bazaar is about 241 km from Kathmandu. The distance is usually covered in 15 days on foot. It is the home of the legendary Sherpas, who have won world recognition as the most reliable climbers. THYANGBOCHE (TENGBOCHE) A day’s walk from Namche Bazaar, Thyangboche offers spectacular views and the renowned Tengboche Gompa, the cultural and religious center of Khumbu. This monastery is perched on a ridgetop with stunning views of peaks all around. It is a popular tourist destination, and a frequent stopping point for those continuing on to Everest Base Camp. Thyangboche’s annual highlight is the festival of Mani Rimdu, a dance-drama retelling the Saga of Buddhism’s victor over Tibet’s ancient Bon religion. A popular festival for both tourists and Sherpas, it is usually held in October. LOBUCHE Lobuche is situated at an altitude of 16,175 feet. It is located below the terminal moraine of a tributary glacier. It is about a 3 hour trek from Pheriche. A climb to Lobuche’s western ridge crest provides some amazing sunset views. Beyond Lobuche there is very little shelter. Lobuche is often used as a base to climb to Kala Patar and return the same day. This is helpful for acclimatization to the high altitudes. KALA PATAR Kala Patar stands at 18,450 feet above level and is the climax of the trek. Kala Patar runs off the peak of Pumori and provides spectacular views of the Khumbu Glacier ringed by the highest mountains in the world. From Kala Patar, Everest Climbers who plan to go to Gorak Shep, which is at the northeast end of the lake, should descend to the sands and contour the lake on its northeast shore.

GORAK SHEP Gorak Shep is at an altitude of 17,000 feet and will be an overnight rest for our team before our trek to Base Camp. By proceeding over the rubble-covered surface of Khumbu Glacier, a few hours will bring the sites of various base camps used for climbing Everest. However, more recent caps are an hour or so beyond. BASE CAMP (17,700 feet above sea level) After reaching the base of the Khumbu icefall (17,000 feet), our team will soon reach Base Camp. Here, we will set up our headquarters. We will prepare for the climb through altitude Acclimatization, icefall inspections, physical training, and rest. CAMP I (19,900 feet) The first camp that the team will establish. We will come back here often as we move supplies up and down the mountain. CAMP II (21,300 feet) Our team will ascend to Camp II, continuing to climb and acclimatize CAMP III (24,500 feet) This check point is the third and often the final camp for many expeditions before making their attempt at the summit. CAMP IV (26,000 feet) The fourth and final weigh station for our team, Camp IV will hold our oxygen and our tents as we make our bid for the summit. SUMMIT (29,028 feet) Everest achieved! _________________________ Roge Holman Founder & CEO The Everest Experience
