SFO BASELINE CARBON FOOTPRINT IN FY 2009

IMPACT OF GHG EMISSION OFFSET MEASURES IN FY2009

COMPARISON EMISSIONEMISSION REDUCTIONS 86% IS DUE TO ENERGY CONSUMPTION 14% OTHER 7% DUE TO ENERGY SAVINGS 91% INDIRECT REDUCTION 2% RENEWABLE

GHG REDUCTION STRATEGY IMPROVE ENERGY EFFCIENCY – NEW EQUIPMENT, GREEN VEHICLES RESOURCE CONSERVATION – OPERATION PRACTICES INFLUENCE STAKEHOLDERS – PUBLIC,TENANTS,CONTRACTO RS,SERVICE PROVIDERS RENWABLE ENERGY - SOLAR Bottled water costs about 2000 times more than tap water.5 Can you imagine paying 2000 times the price of anything else? How about a $10,000 sandwich?

SHORT TERM GHG REDUCTION MEASURES Achieve 75% Solid Waste Recycling Complete PC Air Installation at B/A B&E and at T2 Complete Ongoing Lighting Efficiency Projects Continue Fleet Vehicle Replacement Program Measure Fugitive Refrigerant Gas Losses Other Measures: Green Car Rental and Carbon Kiosks Goal: Achieve Carbon Neutrality by July MONTHS AWAY ….. IF

THEN WHAT ? THIS IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS THAT WILL HAVE TO BE MONITORED, UPDATED AND MODIFIED TO CONTINUE TO MEET THE GOAL OF CARBON NEUTRALITY

IT WILL REQUIRE MANAGEMENT COMMITMENT POLICY CHANGES RESOURCES STAKEHOLDER BUYIN AND PARTICIPATION EDUCATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT

Medium and Long Term Recommendations Continue Lighting Efficiency Measures Install Additional Solar Panels with SFPUC Funding Replace an Outdated Chiller Unit at the Central Plant Replace Outdated T3 Fan Room Equipment Procure More Efficient Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Reduce Vehicle Idling Time through Employee Education

Medium and Long Term Recommendations (Continued) Install Computer Sleep Mode Software Replace Desktop Computers with Laptops Develop a Data Warehouse at SFO Erect a Greenhouse over Biosolids Drying Beds Obtain O&M LEED Certification for Terminal Complex Develop O&M Plan for Terminal Complex

OTHER LONG TERM GHG EMISSION REDUCTION MEASURES Further Improve the Efficiency of Terminal Complex HVAC System Improve HVAC System Efficiency in other SFO Buildings Further Reduce Fuel Consumption at SFO Evaluate Digester Gas Reuse Options Further Enhance Solid Waste Recycling Minimize Refrigerant Gas Emissions

INFLUENCE STAKEHOLDERS GREEN RENTAL CARS SUSTAINABLE FOOD CARBON KIOSKS GREEN CONTRACTORS GREEN TENANTS

Chiller #2 – Installed in 1978

Existing supply fan in B/A E. Installed It is about seven feet tall and perhaps ten feet long. This one fan serves half the boarding area If it fails, then half the boarding area is without ventilation until the unit is repaired. For a catastrophic failure, it could be at least a week of no ventilation.

Fan Wall Fans like those installed in T2. Typically these box fans (3 ft by 3 ft) are in arrays of 3 by 3 (or 4 by 4). If one fan fails, the others pick up the load and supply normal ventilation. They are run by a VFD to maintain all fans at a uniform speed to maintain static pressure at setpoint.
