Euclid Middle School Space Odyssey Period 6

 Liftoff was on Saturday, April 11 th 1970 at 1:13 PM  The Saturn V Rocket was carrying Odyssey and Aquarius.  Their objective was to land the Aquarius on the Moon  Minor vibrations for 5 ½ minutes after takeoff

JJames A. Lovell, Jr. (4) CCommander JJohn L. Swigert (1) CCommand Module Pilot FFred W. Haise, Jr. (1) LLunar Module Pilot KKen Mattingly was originally going to be the Command Module pilot but he contracted rubella which is a German smallpox.

 Goals: Orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth, Investigate man’s ability to function in space and recover both man and spacecraft safely.  Freedom 7, Liberty Bell 7, Friendship 7, Aurora 7, Sigma 7, Faith 7  Cone-shaped one man capsule

 Goals: To subject man and equipment to space flight up to two weeks in duration, dock with orbiting vehicles and to maneuver the docked combination by propulsion system.  Gemini I-XII  Included the first spacewalk.

 When they were flying to the moon, at a distance of 321,866 KM from Earth, one of the service module from the number two oxygen tank exploded.  A fire increased pressure beyond its nominal (1000 PSI) limit, and either the tank or the tank dome failed.  The failure also damaged the first tank or its plumbing.

 Tom Hanks played Jim Lovell  Kevin Bacon played Jack Swigert  Bill Paxton played Fred Haise  $355,237,933 earnings worldwide  Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing in 1996
