7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. Outline Problem / Context / Aim. Methodology. Study Area and Data. Estimation of urban storm water discharges.  The SCS-CN and Linear reservoir.  The SCS-CN and triangular hydrograph.  The SCS-CN and Muskingum Model. Results / Conclusion.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Problem / Context / Aim. So maybe the problem is the design procedure itself ?

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Problem / Context / Aim. Only few urban catchments are gauged No urban hydrometrics data available for sewer networks design. The used design procedures are very simplistic: rational method and its derivatives, SCS-CN, etc.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. Problem / Context / Aim. Identifying the most suitable storm water runoff model Assessment of their reliability Strom water runoff/ Discharge model used in Algeria for sewer network design

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Methodology. The implemented models require only: -Rainfall Characteristics; -Geomorphological characteristics of the catchments. Rainfall events of different durations and intensities; Simulated Hydrographs vs. Observed hydrographs.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Study Area and Data Panoramic view of Wadi Mkacel catchment (Bab el Oued)

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Study Area and Data Bab el Oued is located in th west of Algiers. 240,000 Inhabitants. Oued Mkacel Catchment, A= 753hectares. Maximum Elevation : 380m. Minimum Elevation: Sea level Constitued of 10 subcatchments: Barranes, Sidi Medjber, Frais Vallon, Oued Koriche, Scotto-Nadal, and Jaubert… Global time of concentration: 12minutes. Slope varying from 5 to 19% Hydrological length of the global catchment: 4.5 Km.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Study Area and Data Provided by SEAAL/DRE (sewerage company / water resources administration); Temporary measurement campaign (12 weeks); 9 significant events recorded; Recording raingauge; Velocity, water level measurements.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. Estimation of urban storm water discharges.  The SCS-CN and Linear reservoir.  The SCS-CN and triangular hydrograph.  The SCS-CN and Muskingum Model.

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Results Hydrographs simulated by the SCS-CN method and linear reservoir model vs. Measured hydrograph Hydrographs simulated by the SCS-CN method and Muskingum model vs. Measured hydrograph

7th International Conference on Sewer Processes and Networks , August 2013, Sheffield, U.K. o Conclusion For each method there was only one match between simulated hydrographs and measured hydrographs. It can hardly be said that each method gave a good simulation for a specific event. Also, it becomes obvious that it is hazardous to continue to base the design of drainage networks using models for ungauged catchments without ensuring that the specific conditions of their establishment are the same as those in the urban catchments. o Ongoing research: Developing a model for urban runoff adapted to the context of Algerian cities or more generally to all ungauged urban catchment and find solutions to calibrate these models in lack of hydrometrics measurements.
