20/01/09 OPERA general meeting Nagoya CNGS report

Expectations for 2008 (from collaboration meeting in June 08): nominal intensity for 2008 of 2x10E13 pot/extraction 123 effective beam days from the SPS schedule; super-cycle of 48 s (including LHC cycle), 80% efficiency, during day- time (50% of the time); super-cycle 42 s (removed MD cycle) during the nights, we would eventually expect ~2.28x1019 pot, ~120 interactions/week, ~2200 interactions integrated over the whole 2008 run budget: Intensity 2.0 E 13/extraction reached in August First part of the run very inefficient due to many general problems occurred at the CERN machine complex Recovered performance in October due to the LHC accident and semi-dedicated operation mode

Past CERN performance for the running of the West Area Neutrino facility (Chorus+Nomad) 2008

Statistics: Increase in the duty cycle since September 24th (suppression of LHC pilot cycle) further increas after November 6th (stop of north area) allowed to partially recover the bad performance since the beginning of the run, about 1E19 pot collected during this last period. Final numbers: E 19 pot collected, corresponding to on time events and 1690 candidates in the bricks. Number of events expected with E 19 pot (black outs removed) = 1700

Multi-turn extraction: A necessary tool in order to achieve nominal beam performance -Remove bottleneck due to beam losses at the extraction from the PS - Cleaner beam for SPS, less crytical tuning of the machine - Less radiation damage, less troubles, better efficiency Under commissioning since the beginning of the run First extraction to SPS achieved on August 1 st

MTE Work not finished, to be continued next year (suffered a lot from low resources) Tests perfomed even with CNGS beam at the end of the run, last day neutrinos sent to LNGS with 1.3 E 13 pots/extraction in one over five CNGS cycles CT extraction not dismantled, will work in parallel still at the beginning of next year Once MTE works it will be needed a robust effort to improve the PS performance, we have to make sure that there will be resources for that

Start May 14th

End November 23rd

What we learnt for 2009 ? Average efficiency of 80% was achieved in the last part of the run Intensity of 2.0 E 19 achieved  2.4 E 19 to be demonstrated MTE work has to be finished ~couple of months then PS tuning has to be performed in order to increase the intensity Expectations for 2009: 173 days 48s supercycle 80% efficiency 2.4 E 13 pot/extraction  3.6 E 19 pot 3500 events
