Program Elements Program Coordination Human Resources Development Implementation Grant Solicitation Closed State/Laboratory Partnership Awards Active Solicitation Federal Laboratory Outreach Programs Travel Funding – Active Solicitation

Implementation Award Status: Submitted September 2006 Theme: Elucidating the Fundamentals of Biofuel Systems: Feedstocks, Conversion & Combustion Award outcome anticipated: March/April 2007

State/Laboratory Partnership Awards Find all submission information at: State Endorsement Letter Answers to six questions due to Alabama DOE EPSCoR office by noon, April 18, 2007 Awards are expected to range up to a maximum of $150,000 annually with terms up to three years

Travel Funding to Federal Laboratory Establish Collaboration with Federal Lab Scientists for Energy Related Research Travel Funding in Support of State/Lab Partnership Pre-application $1,500 maximum (no match required) Travel Funding in Support of Energy Research at Federal Labs $1,000 - $5,000 (with 50:50 match requirement)

Travel Funding in Support of State/Lab Partnership Pre-Application What is required (one-page): Purpose of travel Who are you meeting (contact info)/what division Estimated Budget 3-4 paragraphs on results of trip Flyer available for more information

Travel Funding in Support of Energy Research at Federal Labs What is required (3-4 pages): Describe purpose of travel (collaboration, utilize onsite equipment, proposal development, etc.) Length of stay (up to one semester) Outline the budget including 50:50 match (cash or in-kind) Following trip: 3-4 pages describing research experience, new or future collaborations, proposal submission, etc.

Results of Travel Funding Junior faculty traveled to ORNL to use Laser Flash Equipment and Infrared Systems. Established on-going research collaboration with senior ORNL staff. Undergraduate student presented a paper at the American Chemical Society National Meeting based on state-lab collaboration. Faculty member conducted advanced photon experiments at ANL leading to a collaborative research proposal. Faculty and graduate students performed neutron scattering experiments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor facility at ORNL. Graduate student presented a paper at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Congress in Orlando, Florida.

Major Accomplishment The relationship established with DOE and NOAA through the Alabama DOE EPSCoR Travel Grant fostered the scientific collaboration that has now lead the University of Alabama (UA) to develop an aircraft-based research program to measure carbon dioxide flux. UA and NOAA collaborators use this dedi- cated flux aircraft to study spatial and seasonal flux of CO2 in the Southeast and Midwest as part of the North American Carbon Program.
