New Champions City Series | LA Creates 17 October 2013 Los Angeles, California Spotlight Speakers The Creative Economy The New Champions Cities Series in LA focused on understanding and connecting the diverse network of people and organizations that make up the local Los Angeles Creative Economy. The group focused their work on the following four topic areas. Job Creation - Keith McNutt Creative Place Making - Tyler Stonebreaker Sustainability - Matt Peterson Technology & Innovation - Krisztinea “Z” Holly Spotlight Speakers shared brief introductions and overviews of challenges and opportunities in each of the four topic areas. New Champions City Series | LA Creates 17 October 2013 Los Angeles, California Key Note Speakers After hearing a brief summary of the event Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Professor Klaus Schwab offered their insights on the NCCS LA Creates Event and the future of our cities. Mayor Garcetti encouraged the group to not rely exclusively on technology, but also be determined to have the will and courage to work for the future of the communities we live in because, “the way forward is local.” Professor Schwab brought an international perspective to the event. In his estimation countries and cities in the future will be less categorized as “developed” or “developing,” and more often identified as “high innovation” and “low innovation” cities and regions. He stressed that Los Angeles and California could not flourish while the rest of the world struggles and suffers. California has a message to bring to the world: You can do it, and the core of it is entrepreneurism, ingenuity. 3
