CONTAINER SERVICES PRESENTATION TO FTA FORUM 7 SEPTEMBER 2011

INTRODUCTION TO MSC MSC was founded in 1970 and is a privately owned company managed by our headquarters in Geneva. MSC has 421 offices worldwide, employing 30,000+ employees. MSC is the World’s largest organically grown Container Shipping Line with 432 container vessels and 1,815,000 TEUs Intake Capacity

MSC UK’s STORY MSC’s first UK office opened in Hull in 1977 to handle the agency for MSC’s vessels sailing to East Africa and the Red Sea. In 1982 we moved Ports from Hull to Southampton. In 1984 we moved to Felixstowe where the continued growth of MSC’s UK activities enabled the company to develop into the modern Liner Agency that it is today. MSC UK’s headquarters is based in Ipswich.

MSC’S REGIONAL OPTIONS Tilbury Weekly via Antwerp Felixstowe Weekly Direct Liverpool Weekly via Antwerp Grangemouth Weekly via Antwerp Teesport Weekly via Antwerp Bristol Weekly via Antwerp Greenock Weekly via Antwerp

HOW DO WE BEST SERVE THE MSC UK CUSTOMER NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE! MSC UK have an available resource of over 500 trucks, including 43 trucks owned by the Company. We perform in excess of 1350 loaded moves per day. In 2010 MSC UK’s total UK logistics moves were 341,222. This equates to 6,562 moves every week, employing an average of 450 trucks weekly. Of these moves 25% were moved by rail, saving 1.8m road miles.

TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE Leeds Bristol Birmingham / Hams Hall Widnes Manchester Liverpool Grangemouth Coatbridge Teesport Cleveland Felixstowe Tilbury / Thamseport Selby Port Railhead Railhead & Contract Service Doncaster Daventry Greenock

WHAT MSC OFFERS THE SCOTTISH MARKET Weekly services to Antwerp from Grangemouth and Greenock to connect with our worldwide services Rail from Coatbridge to Felixstowe and vice versa to load directly to mainline services Canadian service for Scottish imports and exports via Liverpool, which is rail operated.

SCOTTISH MARKET AS SEEN BY MSC Exports Major components Beverages Recycled products Specialist traffics i.e. Quaker Oats, potato season, frozen fish Imports Furniture Consumer goods Empty barrels (whisky) A major issue for MSC is Import to Export imbalance

DIFFICULTIES The main difficulties MSC face in the Scottish market are: Empty equipment supply Fluctuating market demands MSC feeder constraints due to ports/equipment sizes Lack of equipment in the North West Continent Storage space at ports and railheads Commercial feeder space

SOLUTIONS MSC utilise various methods of empty equipment repositioning: Own feeder services ex Antwerp in Greenock and Grangemouth Commercial feeders ex Felixstowe and South Shields to Grangemouth Commercial feeders ex Liverpool to Greenock Rail services ex Liverpool (Garston) to Coatbridge Rail services ex Birmingham (Hamshall) to Moss End

CONCLUSION Scotland must have a short sea feeder service to move containers. The reliance on exit via English ports has to stop as this is too expensive! Is there an acceptance by importers and exporters that feeders into Scottish ports is the future? Do Scottish port recognise that they will always be feeder ports and not mother ports. MSC are committed to supporting the Scottish market through our feeder service.
