Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-1© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II Startblock Use the subjunctive, also called the Konjunktiv II, to talk about hypothetical or unreal conditions, to express wishes, and to make polite requests. Notes: subjunctive = Konjunktiv II Hypothetical/unreal conditions, wishes, polite requests

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-2© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II To form the subjunctive of weak verbs and the modal verbs sollen and wollen, add the subjunctive endings -e, -est, -e; -en, -et, -en to the Präteritum stem. The subjunctive forms of these verbs are identical to their Präteritum forms. Wir sollten vier Mal pro Woche Sport treiben. We should exercise four times a week. Ich wünschte, ich spielte besser Fußball. I wish I played soccer better.

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-3© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II To form the subjunctive of strong verbs, add the subjunctive endings to the Präteritum stem. If the stem vowel is a, o, or u, add an Umlaut. The verbs sein and haben and the modals dürfen, können, mögen, and müssen also follow this pattern.

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-4© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II The only mixed verb commonly used in the subjunctive is wissen. Its subjunctive forms are the same as its Präteritum forms, but with an added Umlaut on the stem vowel. Wüssten Sie, wo die Apotheke ist? Would you happen to know where the pharmacy is? Wenn ich das nur wüsste! If only I knew that!

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-5© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II ACHTUNG In conversation, German speakers often shorten the du and ihr subjunctive endings to -st and -t: du gingst, ihr gingt; du wärst, ihr wärt.

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-6© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II Modals and the verbs haben and sein are often used in the subjunctive to make polite requests or ask questions. Hätten Sie Lust, diesen Film mit mir zu sehen? Do you feel like seeing this movie with me? Könntest du mir bitte ein Taschentuch reichen? Could you hand me a tissue, please?

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-7© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II To express a wish that is contrary to reality, use the subjunctive form of wünschen with another clause in the subjunctive. Ich wünschte, wir hätten mehr Zeit! I wish we had more time! Ich wünschte, ich könnte heute schwimmen gehen. I wish I could go swimming today!

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-8© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II The conjunction wenn (if) is often used with nur to mean if only. Move the conjugated verb to the end of a clause beginning with wenn. Wenn wir nur mehr Zeit hätten! If only we had more time! Wenn ich heute nur schwimmen gehen könnte! If only I could go swimming today! Notes: wenn is a subordinating conjunction = it kicks the conjugated verb to the end!

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-9© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II ACHTUNG Ich möchte is typically used instead of ich wollte as the polite equivalent of ich will. Ich hätte gern is also frequently used for ordering in a restaurant.

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-10© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II To express a condition that is hypothetical or contrary to fact, use a wenn-clause with a second clause that indicates what would happen if the wenn-clause were true. Wenn du Zeit hättest, könnten wir heute Abend ins Konzert gehen. If you had time, we could go to a concert this evening. Wenn mir die Füße nicht so weh täten, käme ich gern mit euch wandern. If my feet didn’t hurt so much, I’d be happy to come hiking with you. Notes: if this WERE true, THEN this WOULD happen.

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-11© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II You can use the conjunction dann to introduce the second clause in a hypothetical statement. Wenn du nicht so spät ins Bett gingest... If you didn’t go to bed so late,... dann wärest du nicht so müde. then you wouldn’t be so tired. Notes: cause/effect, if…then…

Strukturen 1B.1 LEKTION 1B 1B.1-12© 2014 by Vista Higher Learning, Inc. All rights reserved. Der Konjunktiv II Use als ob with the subjunctive, instead of wenn, to mean as if. Er tut, als ob er krank wäre. He’s acting as if he were sick. Du siehst aus, als ob du eine Grippe hättest. You look as if you had the flu.
