SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Problem ► Students would really like to use the technology at school but there isn’t enough time in the day.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Proposal ► Keep the school computer lab open after school and on weekends.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Rationale ► Having the computer lab open after-school and on weekends will allow more students to use technology to complete their school work or to learn new things. ► Many students don’t have computers at home. ► There is not enough time during school to finish all that we want to do. ► Having more access to computers will help us more efficiently complete our schoolwork.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Our School Technology Plan Our school technology plan includes the following objective: “Students will have access to technology as a work tool and a learning tool to develop skills and attitudes necessary to think independently and to function confidently and productively in our technologically changing society.” Operating the computer on weekends and after- school well help the school achieve this objective.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Research: Supporting Data We surveyed students at our school to learn their opinions about keeping the computer lab open after-school or on weekends. About our survey: ► We set up a table outside the cafeteria for 5 days in a row. ► Our survey included 75 seventh and eighth graders. ► The survey had 10 multiple-choice questions.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Research: Supporting Data (continued) Our research showed that students would be very likely to use the computer lab at least once a month after-school or on weekends and very likely to use it once a week. ► 48% said they would use the computer lab after-school or on weekends on at least once a month. ► 36% said they would use the computer lab after-school or on weekends at least once a week. ► 12% said they would prefer to use the lab after-school and NOT on weekends. ► 8% said they would NEVER use the computer lab after-school or on weekends.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Obstacles We are aware that there are several obstacles. The #1 obstacle is adult supervision. We are working with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to see if they can provide volunteers for a limited number of hours per week. Mrs. Smith has volunteered to coordinate the schedule and post hours on the door.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Proposal Details Our proposal includes the following details. We would like to work further with you to develop a plan for our school. 1. Keep the computer lab open Mon. and Wed. until 5 o’clock. 2. Keep the computer lab open Sun. from 2 to 5 o’clock. 3. Work with the PTA to secure volunteer parent monitors. 4. Work with School Tech Club to secure student volunteers. 5. Develop set of rules and a student agreement form that students must sign. 6. Revisit plan in the Spring to see if hours should be adjusted according to demand.

SAMPLE PRESENTATION May be reproduced for student use. © NetDay Student Voices Resource Center Support We have shared our proposal with the following groups and have their support. ► PTA ► Student Council ► Mrs. Smith - School Technology Coordinator (Mrs. Smith has offered to help us support the development of this plan.) ► Mr. James, Miss Garcia, Ms. Wong (math, science, and English department heads)
