Major Emphasis of ESS To enhance the present level of performance of students who are having difficulty in one or more content area To provide additional instruction to students who have been retained or are at risk of being retained To close the achievement gap of low- performing students

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS Opportunities to receive help on homework or class assignments Opportunities to receive remedial help for developmental knowledge or skills that they may not have mastered in the past (i.e. reading comprehension, math concepts) A place to practice developing language skills

ESS Benefits for the School Program Achievement gaps can be addressed by providing more focused and individualized instruction and enrichment to struggling students. ELL students can obtain additional support through ESS and experience more opportunities to learn and use English in an educational setting. Students have more opportunity to retain and enhance what they are learning in the classroom each day.

ESS Benefits for the School Program Students can work together and learn in smaller group settings. Students are offered a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment. Parental involvement is encouraged and enhanced. Community involvement is encouraged and enhanced.

ESS Regulation (704 KAR 3:390) ESS can be offered during the regular school day. Districts must apply for a waiver to use the daytime program. There is not a “cap” on the amount you can spend for instructional resources and supplies. The 5% “cap” on administrative costs remains.

YOUR PROGRAM The initial planning should determine what you want your program to accomplish. This is critical to help guide decision making, identifying the program model to be implemented, finding resources, seeking additional funding, building partnerships and even planning the location of the program.

Program Design Certain program models are not appropriate for every situation. An effective ESS program must meet the needs of the children you wish to sere.

Program Design Analyze your existing programs to determine their effectiveness-the model can be CHANGED if it is not working or a program model can be IMPROVED if it is getting positive results-The ESS PERKS document is a resource that can help with this process.

DAYTIME WAIVER If, after existing programs have been analyzed, a daytime program is sought, a Daytime Waiver Request must be submitted and “approved” by KDE.

To CONTINUE a daytime program: An evaluation is due to KDE by June 30 each year a daytime program is offered. This evaluation is due even if the program will NOT be continued for the next year. A continuation will be approved if the program is showing positive results or if changes are identified to address problematic areas.
