A Grower’s Guide

Grow Your Own… Trialed in November 2009 – Northland Joint venture between Grassroots Rural Health Club, Auckland Medical School and Northland DHB Year 9 and 10 students from deciles 5 and below schools A way to give back to rural communities and increase the intake of rural students in the study of health To encourage and foster student interest in health careers and in tertiary study

Northland 2009 The beginning

The Schools… Tikipunga High School Whangarei Boys High Kamo High Kaitaia College Dargaville High School Opononi Area School Visit each school every two years 17 Auckland Medical Students; 3 groups

The Program… 10 minute presentation introducing Grassroots, Auckland University and the health professions. Focus on the pro’s of study and work in health Focus on key issues affecting rural students and study

Workshops… 10 minute stations on basic anatomy and clinical skills 4 Stations: - Anatomy - Blood Pressure & Pulse - CPR - Reflexes Engage students – let them go for it!

Feedback.. Huge amount of positive feedback from students, teachers and medical professionals Over 300 students signed up Follow up needed Keep things fun and interactive! Plans for round two in 2010…….

Judgment Day… Both trips hugely successful Cemented in ‘Grow Your Own’ as a high quality event which Grassroots plans to continue into future years Over 500 students signed up as interested across both trips Building on connections made and the reputation established in both regions
