Elementary School Counselor

A Little About Me

Goals of REACH Establish a comprehensive/systemic elementary school counseling/mental health program in Pike elementary schools as measured by the American School Counselor Association standards. Enable more data based decision making to improve instructional practices, policies, and student outcomes in elementary schools. Increase counseling/mental health support for children in military families.

Goals of REACH Build and increase protective factors through prevention and positive youth development programming. Enhance parent, family, and community support for at-risk children through evidence based programs and counseling/mental health services. Increase staff capacity related to best practices in the ASCA Counseling model by developing pro-social behaviors, positive youth development, mental health services, etc. through professional development.

The American School Counselor Association National Framework The foundation provides the what of the program, discussing what every student will know and be able to do. ∙ Beliefs and philosophy: Guides the program development, implementation and evaluation ∙ Mission: Describes the program’s purpose and provides the vision of what is desired ∙ Domains: Facilitates student development in all aspects. The delivery system addresses how the program will be implemented. ∙ Guidance curriculum: Consists of structured developmental lessons that will assist students in achieving the competencies and is presented through individual, group, and classroom activities. ∙ Responsive services: Meeting students’ immediate needs. ∙ Systems support: The professional development, consultation, and collaboration established in order to enhance the total school counseling program.

The American School Counselor Association National Framework The management system addresses the when, why, and on what authority the program will be implemented. ∙ Management agreements: School counselor and administration agree on responsibilities. ∙ Student monitoring: Collect, analyze, and interpret data to monitor student achievement. ∙ Use of data: Implementing a data driven school program to increase student achievement. Accountability answers the question, “How are students different as a result of the program?” ∙ Results reports: Ensure programs are carried out, analyzed for effectiveness and improved. ∙ School Counselor Performance Standards: Align with the ASCA National Model. ∙ The Program Audit: Tool used to set standards for the school counseling program.  

CAPPED Mission The Pike REACH elementary school counseling program will improve educational services for students, staff and families through the implementation of counseling best practices based on the Indiana Department of Education School Counseling Job Description and American School Counseling Association model by accomplishing the following: Collaborating with all stakeholders to provide services, promote academic and social growth, and explore post-secondary opportunities for students and families.   Analyzing data to improve student achievement and climate through the application of best practices (i.e.-individual, classroom, and group counseling). Promoting and implementing preventative programs that build leadership and increase positive peer interactions. Providing professional development to staff in order to build capacity and enhance educational services. Ensuring equity and access to a quality education for every student. Developing a comprehensive school counseling program that reflects the schools’ needs and supports all students.

Appropriate Activities for School Counselors Advocate for a fair and equal education for ALL students Analyze data in regards to student achievement Collaborate with others in order to provide systemic change Direct counseling services to ALL referred students Provide staff with effective suggestions and professional development

Inappropriate Activities for School Counselors Assist with duties in the front office Performing disciplinary actions Providing therapy or long-term counseling to address psychological disorders Serving as a data entry clerk Supervising classrooms or common areas Teaching classes when teachers are absent

Counseling Referral Process Step 1: Complete the entire referral form front and back. Step 2: Submit form to the Principal or designee.
