REVIEW Let Us Persevere in Christ Three main questions Christ Us Who is He? Who is He not? Us What is our relation to Christ and God? What should we do? Persevere! What does that look like?

REVIEW God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (Hebrews 1:1-4 NKJ)

REVIEW Let Us Persevere in Christ Three main questions from vv. 1:1-4 Jesus Christ is: Prophetic (how God spoke to us) Appointed heir & created through God made flesh (If you have seen Me...) Sustainer of everything The One Who purged our sins and sits at God’s right hand He is better than the Angels. We are those who receive God’s word hear from the Son are those whose sins He purged

The Context Chapters 3 & 4 Laid out various aspects of ‘Entering God’s Rest’ compared us (who have heard from God through Jesus Christ) to desert wanderers following Moses. In this case the “Rest” is the Promised Land Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:11 NKJ) The next couple verses describe that Word of God will find out our sins.

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. 3 Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You." 6 As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek"; 7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek," (Hebrews 4:14-10 NKJ)

Let us hold fast our confession. Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. (Hebrews 2:17-3:2 NKJ) The Author is repeating a point he made earlier. Because of our sin, we cannot be with God. Jesus, Who is very God and very man, though, purged our sins, and calls us to Him. What we see is some righteousness and some sin in our lives, and no help in this spiritual desert of a world. We need to trust, to hold fast to the fact that He is able and willing to do for us and others what He claims.

Let us hold fast our confession. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. We should be looking at the Scriptures with one eye and our lives with the other to find out our sins. We need to ask God to help us to do this, to search us. As we find them, we need to go to Him and ask for mercy, for forgiveness. We also need to ask to ask for His grace that we will be able to live differently as we go forward. We need His grace to have the power to make it right as far we can.

Your Basic Highpriest 1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. 3 Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. The author now shows us that Jesus is grater than Aaron. Leviticus prescribes several sacrifices for sins committed in ignorance. Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. (Psalm 19:12 NKJ)

Your basic Scriptural Evidence 5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You." 6 As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek" The author now shows us that Jesus is grater than Aaron. The Psalms came before the Christ. Psalm 2:7 The Nations cannot overcome the Messiah Psalm 110: Whom David calls Lord A priest of a different order than Aaron. These are about Jesus, they foretell Who He is.

Jesus Trusts and Obeys even It not JUST that But Jesus also 7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek," It not JUST that Jesus is the Son He is foretold God called Him But Jesus also Trusts and Obeys. This is our High Priest through Whom we faithfully, trustingly pray Whom we must obey.
