Target Vocabulary Core: Have/has He/she Fringe: Cake Balloon(s) Gift/present Card Boy Girl Party
Teaching Ideas Teach the target vocabulary first. Before using with your student, preview the book, especially the animations to best support communication opportunities. Read the book together; ask questions that support use of the target vocabulary (the idea is NOT for the student to copy icon sequences). Prompt to use the targets (i.e., “Tell me about the girl.” rather than “What does the girl have?”). The adult should maintain control of the mouse to produce the action. Use a 5- second time delay after transitioning to a slide to allow the student time to initiate with the core verb “go,” before clicking the mouse. Skip articles like “the” and “a” until student has mastered the core vocabulary. Look up other words; pivot off the core vocabulary to include fringe (i.e., “Have cake”). Create an event (i.e., picnic, party) where students “have” different items. Allow students to talk about what they and others “have.”
