Gods What are gods? What did some of the gods do? Where were gods placed? Who was the oldest god? The similarities between Gods & Goddesses……… Why do gods have weird looks or head symbols?

What are gods? Gods are men that the Egyptians and many other citizens believe in. Some gods are believed to do many great jobs. For instance, Bess was the protector of pregnant women, children and the newborn. Ra was the sun god, and he was one of the most important and powerful gods. You see, gods are many different people who do different things. There are goddesses, too, but I’ll leave all that goddess stuff up to Raija. I bet she’ll tell all about them, just like I did about the gods.

What did some gods do? Horus was the god of the sky. Horus was well-known as the protector of the ruler of Egypt. The Egyptians had many different beliefs about the god Horus. One of the beliefs was that Horus was the son of Isis and Osiris. Because he was an important god, he has a temple located in Edfu, Upper Egypt, dedicated to him. Osiris was the god of the dead and the ruler of the underworld. He was the brother/husband of Isis, and the brother of Nepthys and Seth. He was also the father of Horus. As well as a god of resurrection and fertility. In fact, the ancient Egyptians believed that Osiris gave them the gift crops. A large temple was built to honor Osiris at Abydos.

Who was the oldest god? Atum is the oldest god. He created himself (wow, that’s hard to believe)! He also created Shu and Tefnut. Many ancient Egyptians believed that he was the creator of the whole world! The ancient Egyptians believed that Atum rose from the waters of confusion (Nun) and created all the gods.

Where were gods placed? Gods that were important to all the Egyptians the most had temples to honor them. Some gods, like Khepri, did not have any temples. Instead, they were connected with some of the important gods. I hope that one day I can go to one of the museums that have some of the Egyptian statues.

Why did gods have weird looks or head symbols? Like goddesses, gods have weird head symbols because it has something to do with their abilities and/or jobs. EX. This is Seth, the jealous brother of Osiris. He has the head of a seth animal.

The similarities between gods & goddesses Osiris & Nephthys Both Osiris and Nephthys are the god and goddess of the dead. Nephthys was the sister of Isis and Osiris and the sister/wife of Seth. Nephthys was also the mother of Anubis. Osiris was the brother/husband of Isis. He was also the father of Horus. He was the god of resurrection and fertility.
