MRSA and Pandemic Flu  MRSA – Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (Mursa) –Feeds on open wounds, invasive devices, and weakened immune systems. –A 2007 report by Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that the number of MRSA infections treated in hospitals doubled nationwide, from approximately 127,00 in 1999 to 278,000 in  Pandemic Flu –Is an epidemic of the influenza virus that spreads on a worldwide scale and infects a large proportion of the human population. –The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that there is a substantial risk of an Pandemic Flu within the next few years. –Pandemic Flu is an infectious disease of birds and mammals caused by an RNA virus of the family Orthomyxovidridae (the influenza viruses).

MRSA  MRSA has been responsible for 94,360 serious infections and associated with 18,650 hospital stay related deaths in the United States in 2005 alone.  According to the figures above, MRSA infections are responsible for more deaths in the United States each year than AIDS.  Statistics suggest that a national epidemic might be growing out of control, but it is difficult to quantify the degree of morbidity and mortality attributable to MRSA.  Symptoms of MRSA are: –Generally start as small red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. –These can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses that require surgical draining. –Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. –But they can also burrow deep into the body, causing potentially life threatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.

Pandemic Flu  Typically, influenza is transmitted from infected mammals through the air by coughs or sneezes, creating aerosols containing the virus, and from infected birds through their droppings.  Influenza can also be transmitted by saliva, nasal secretions, feces and blood.  This virus can remain infectious for about one week at human body temperature, over 30 days at 0 degrees celsius, and indefinitely at very low temperatures.  In 1918 the Pandemic Flu killed around 150,000 people.  Symptoms of Pandemic Flu are: –Fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, and weakness, vomiting and nausea, often confused with the common flue or “24 hour flu”.

Prevention Tips  Ensure the availability of adequate facilities and supplies that encourage good hygiene.  Make sure equipment and surfaced are cleaned with detergent based cleaners Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered disinfectants.  Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol based hand sanitizer.  Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered until healed.

Prevention Tips  Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages.  Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.  Use a barrier (clothing) between your skin and shared equipment.  Wipe down equipment before and after each use.  For more prevention tips visit the following sites: treatments/understanding-mrsa-preventionhttp:// treatments/understanding-mrsa-prevention -
