Connexions Workshop How to use Connexions as an author, teacher, or student C. Sidney Burrus Rice University PASI, May 5, 2010

Connexions Web Page URL: Tabs: Home, Content, Lenses, About Us, Help, MyCnx My Account: Username, Pass word –Get an account

MyCnx, My Workspace My Cnx: –Links to your content and groups My Workspace: –Private space; content can be created, modified, deleted, published, etc. My Workgroup: –Shared spaces where content can be worked on by you and others that you invite.

Cnx Repository Three categories: Modules: Small (1/2 page to 20 pages) objects on one concept, a quantum of information Collections: A sequential grouping of modules to be a report, book, curriculum, etc. Lenses: Endorsements owned by an individual, group, organization, society (LACCEI??)

Content Tab (user) Search example “Fast Fourier Transform” –Collection page: Next, Previous, –Table of Contents –Order a printed copy (QOOP) –Creative Commons copyright (cc-by) –Download pdf

Use by an Author First, you must get an account, then log on Go to your workspace or a workgroup (must create workgroup and members) Example collection: FFT2 –Module: “Multidimensional …” –Creation or edit: import; publish, print, etc. Edit-in-place, on-line, print, etc Cc-by

Collections by Authors and Teachers Collections can be constructed from published modules in the repository Collections can have one or two modules or hundreds of modules Collections are created by authors with an account just like modules and must be published to be seen by others They can be viewed, down-loaded, or purchased

Use by an Author Log on Go to your workspace or a workgroup (must create workgroup and assign members) Workgroup is the “prepublication” space where you collaborative, write, share, and perhaps, delete. Very democratic, anyone can write or edit.

Use by an Author When everyone in the workgroup is ready, you can PUBLISH. This is a serious step because it cannot be reversed. Must assign an author(s), maintainer, and copyright holder. It is now open to the public, forever. After publication, you can modify the module by editing it. You must “check it out”, edit it, then republish it. You can build collections in a somewhat similar way

Use by an Author After a module or collection is published, you can use it on-line, create a pdf file by “printing”, or purchase a printed and bound copy from QOOP. Very good for reports, essays, books, Conference Proceedings, or entire curriculums.
