Walter Dean Myers A Webquest Created For Mrs. Webb’s Mt. Mourne Language A Classes Check our website for the due date.

Introduction Authors entertain us with their vivid imagination and their talent for writing. We know many of their popular stories, but what do we really know about them? Where did they come from? What do they look like? How do they come up with the ideas for their wonderful stories? Is the author working on any new stories?

Tasks ~ Each task is explained in detail on the following slides. You will research and find the answers the questions listed. You will write a letter to Walter Dean Myers. You will write a list of the books that Walter Dean Myers has written. You will create a picture collage of Harlem in the 1930s – 1950s. Bind all of your work in a self created “book” that you should dedicate to the author. Write a dedication to the author. Create a cover for your “book.”

Questions about Walter Dean Myers (These should be on their own page in your book) Write or type out the question and answer each question in complete sentences. Where does the Walter Dean Myers live? When and where was the he born? How does he come up with story ideas? (Are their stories based on real life events or from a creative imagination?) When he needs an illustrator, who does he use and why? Is the author working on a new piece of literature?

Write a letter to Walter Dean Myers You may have not yet read any books by Walter Dean Myers, but you can still write him a letter. Use the website below to help you with ideas. You do NOT have to mail this letter. Include this letter in your finished self created book. http://www.readingrockets.org/article/24612/

Walter Dean Myers’ Work Research the books that Walter Dean Myers has written. Create a list of Walter Dean Myers’ books that he has written. After you have recorded these books, choose one that you would like to read. Explain why this book sounds interesting to you. What connections can you make to this book that would make you want to read it?

Harlem Research Harlem during the 1930s – 1950s. Create a picture/image collage of Harlem during this time period. You can print pictures or draw pictures. Remember a collage contains pictures that cover the entire paper. Include this paper in your self created book.

Put it all together! Bind all of your work in a self created “book” that you should dedicate to the author. Write a dedication to the author. Create a cover for your “book.” You should have a total of 5 pages in your book: dedication page, questions about Myers, letter to Myers, book list, and a Harlem collage.

Way to Go!! Self assess your work. REFLECT Does your work look like it belongs to a student who chooses to attend Mt. Mourne? Are you proud of your product? DO NOT FORGET YOUR READING AND DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL WORK.
