Presentation transcript:

from Night Define: Authors purpose, rhetoric, verbal irony How does he use irony in the first sentence? What is the author really trying to say? How will the advice by the block leader increase the prisoners chance for survival (lines 38-55) We know tone is the authors attitude toward his reader or subject. It is created by the author’s choice of words and examples. Reread lines (38-40) “Slaughterhouses” What tone do these words create?

from Night cont. Analyzing Author’s Purpose and Rhetoric (38-52) Authors often reveal their purpose through details in the text. Cite Textual Evidence: An important person in the block is the Blockalteste. What have you learned about this person from the authors description? (support your answer with relevant text) What does this description reveal about the author’s purpose? Define: reprieve, allusion, connotation & denotation

from Night cont. Why would the author use the word reprieve instead of a word like salvation? Applying Academic Vocabulary (dimension & sustain): Write then discuss how the dimension of the Holocaust is hard to comprehend; this small piece of one memoir conveys only a tiny piece part of a large horror. Question: How do you think prisoners were able to sustain themselves- not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally?

from Night cont. Analyzing Authors Purpose and Rhetoric (Lines 61-65): Take a look at the reference to the Last Judgment in line 65. This line refers to God’s final Judgment of a person’s thoughts and actions. Explain why this is an especially strong comparison under these circumstances.

from Night cont. Write and discuss: Analyzing the impact of word choice on tone: (Lines 67-73): In order to convey tone, authors use words with particular connotations, or shades of meaning. Remember connotations can be both positive and negative. Cite textual evidence (Line 67-73): Reread lines 67-73. Find a word in the passage with a negative connotation. What tone is created by the use of this word? What word with a similar meaning would have a positive connotation? Write and discuss: Describe the authors behavior during the selection process (line 80- 90)

from Night cont. Analyzing the impact of word choice to reinforce tone: (Lines 83-86): Explain the different connotations of the thin and skinny. What effect does repetition of skinny have? *Hint* Both words have varying connotations. Analyzing Authors Purpose and Rhetoric (Lines 89 – 94): Authors often use the rhetorical device of contrast, or showing difference, to convey their purpose. How does Wiesel describe Yossi and himself? How does he describe those who have been selected? Why do you think Wiesel might have chosen to depict this contrast?

from Night cont. Critical Vocabulary Reprieve: The author shows how the prisoners might escape immediate punishment. Why would the author use the word reprieve instead of a word like salvation?
