WINNING SUPPORT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA IN ORGANIZATIONS - THE ULTIMATE PARTICIPATORY GAME

BRIEF HISTORY The old days: Manual systems -> Automated internal systems –no sharing outside the org. Resistance to having internet access at work -> Imagine that! Now: Some reasons for not utilizing social media are similar to those advanced for internet access including security, loss of control issues, etc. We will look at some using SM successfully.

Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is a term describing the trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, and blogs. Web 2.0 is a new field, particularly in local government. However, all signs indicate that this will at some point become a mandate of constituents for interacting and communicating in a bi-directional fashion with their government.World Wide Webweb designcreativity hosted servicessocial-networking siteswikis blogs

Gov 2.0 Government 2.0 is the term for attempts to apply the social networking and integration advantages of Web 2.0 to the practice of governmentWeb dia.asphttp://co.morris.nj.us/generalHTML/socialme dia.asp

Twitter Twitter offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as follower. Users can follow lists (groups) of authors instead of just following individual authors.social networkingmicroblogging text-basedcharactersprofile

Linkedin LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Think Facebook with a more professional bent. The profiles look more like resumes and you have "contacts" instead of "friends" as you would have on Facebook. Groups allow for multidiscipline input as an alternative to list shares for professional organizations such as NIGP or NPI.

GovLoop GovLoop is the premier social network for government connecting over 65,000 federal, state and local employees, contractors and academics.

Facebook A Facebook page can help local governments build stronger social connections to the citizens they represent. Features include status updates, polling, discussions, videos and photos. CountyNJ/app_ CountyNJ/app_ ?fref=tshttps:// ?fref=ts

YouTube YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. Unregistered users can watch the videos, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos.video-sharingwebsite
