From White Rule To Black Misrule Zimbabwe From White Rule To Black Misrule

Objectives Label Zimbabwe on a blank map of sub-Saharan Africa. Explain how inflation affects ordinary people. Describe how the country's leaders displayed racism both before and after the change in government. Compare and contrast Zimbabwe’s farms before and after the change in government. Compare and contrast standard of living for Blacks in Zimbabwe before and after the change in government.

Thanks for the cash! The citizens won’t miss it at all! Terms and People Inflation is an increase in the amount of money resulting in higher prices. Thanks for the cash! The citizens won’t miss it at all! Thanks for getting me elected! Robert Mugabe is the president of Zimbabwe. Patronage System is using the wealth of the country to reward people for their political support. Confiscation is what the government calls it when it takes people’s things. Ethnic cleansing is the forced removal of one ethnic group from a land.

Zimbabwe has some wildlife tourism. Zimbabwe is home to one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls – Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe has some wildlife tourism.

Early in the 1900s, the country was called Rhodesia. It was an agricultural nation and fed its people and exported food to its neighbors. Rhodesia was called the breadbasket of Africa. Rhodesia, however, was a White-dominated country.

Rhodesia did not have legal discrimination like South Africa or the US South. Blacks could freely compete for jobs. On the other hand, Blacks often had difficulty competing for the best jobs because they lacked education. On the other hand, Blacks in Rhodesia were able to find better jobs than they could in other African countries. Many Blacks even immigrated into Rhodesia. Whites continued to own most of the large farms and hold most of the government positions.

A civil war was fought from 1965-1979. Blacks fought on both sides.

They changed the name of the country from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe came to power in 1987 and has been president ever since. Mugabe has been accused of numerous atrocities.

Gives interviews with former supporters; has some action shots

When it was Rhodesia, they had some of the best agriculture in Africa When it was Rhodesia, they had some of the best agriculture in Africa. They not only fed themselves, but they exported food to other African countries. The land was given to Blacks. Many of them did not know how to farm. Now that it was Zimbabwe, farmers that were White were forced off their land, beaten, sometimes murdered.

The financial situation for Blacks in Zimbawe is much worse now than it was before the change in government.

Zimbabwe today is both the poorest and least healthiest country in the world.

Zimbabwe has one of the highest mortality rates in the world for mothers giving birth. Zimbabwe has such troubles because Mugabe gave the farm land to inexperienced farmers and because he inflated the money supply.

What happened to those prices? Many people that don’t know economics don’t understand why the government doesn’t just print more money and make everyone richer. 2013 What happened to those prices? 2012 2011 2010 I’ll just print more money – that will solve everything! The result however, is that everything just costs more.

Robert Mugabe thought he could just borrow money from other nations and then print money to pay it back. Soon, his people began to feel the effects of this Inflation.

Emphasis on replacement of Zimbabwe dollars with gold Emphasis on replacement of Zimbabwe dollars with gold. Subtitled talk with natives speaking native languages.

Biographical information about RM. Criticism comes from Blacks Biographical information about RM. Criticism comes from Blacks. Mugabe’s brutal attacks on political opponents, involvement in Congo War, and land reform policies. “Overstayed” his usefulness.

Life story: mentions seizure of farms and mines; attacks on homosexuals

When it was Rhodesia Now that it’s Zimbabwe Almost all government was run by Whites. All government is run by Blacks. Almost all Blacks were poorer than Whites; Whites owned most of the land. The government decides which Blacks can own land; few Whites remain. Blacks in Rhodesia were better off financially than most Blacks in Africa. Blacks in Zimbabwe are among the poorest in Africa. Rhodesia produced enough food to feed itself and to export to other nations in Africa. Zimbabwe cannot produce enough food to feed itself and must import food. No discrimination laws existed: educated or talented Blacks could succeed – but only a few did. Discrimination laws exist: People have had their land and property stolen from them based only on the color of their skins.

Which country is Zimbabwe? What was Zimbabwe’s previous name? A Nicaragua B Zaire C Rhodesia D South Africa A B What is inflation? Zimbabwe’s economy is: When the government prints more money C Better than most countries in Africa D When the government increases the production of goods About the same as most countries in Africa When the government decreases the size of the military Worse than most countries in Africa When the government decides who can and can’t own farms
