Team Teaching Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

The Monitoring Teacher model One teacher assumes the responsibility for instructing the entire class. The other teacher circulates the room and monitors student understanding and behavior. Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

The Monitoring Teacher model in the classroom A writing class is studying a unit on writing scientific research papers. One teacher teaches a mini-lesson on the use of specialized punctuation in scientific writing. The other teacher observes the students for signs of understanding, answers student questions, and assists students as they work on written practice items. Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

Activity With your teaching partner, brainstorm instructional activities specifically linked to the subject or program you plan to teach where you could use Monitoring Teacher. Discuss times and situations where you have used the Monitoring Teacher model in the classroom. Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

Activity Look at the focus questions. (link) Then watch the video (Link to video) and note the characteristics of the Monitoring Teacher model. What did you see that indicated this was an example of the Monitoring Teacher model? Answer the focus questions together. Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

Activity As a team, create a brief lesson activity using the Monitoring Teacher model that you could use in your program. Discuss how to assess the impact of the Monitoring Teacher model on students. Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

Activity What preparation will you and your partner teacher need to do to implement the Monitoring Teacher model in your sample lesson? Section 7: Monitoring Teacher

Activity – review and reflect Discuss the advantages, opportunities, and challenges of using the Monitoring Teacher model in I-BEST. Reflecting on your integrated outcomes and subject, when would this model be most useful, helpful, productive? Section 7: Monitoring Teacher
